Is there a point to fishing poles?

I mainly like to fish for those random 0.1% mounts you can get like the Pond Nettle from Argus or the Sea Ray from BfA’s ocean. So is there a point to fishing with something like the Legion Artifact pole as opposed to something that’s aesthetically pleasing but has 2 less fishing skill bonus if all I’m going to be fishing for is mounts for hours on end. Does the +15 skill impact me at all? Is there a point to using the rods?

If you have maxed fishing, nah, not really; even if you don’t the bonuses aren’t all that significant. If I remember right they used to be required to fish, but that stopped being a thing awhile ago - went the same was as required skinning knives. Instead of being a requirement, now they just give you a little bump to the skill.

Edit: Listen to Evelyana. That guy (girl) fishes.

The Underlight Angler lets you walk on water and turn into a shark while under water. It also gives you underwater breathing and a speed boost (anywhere in Azeroth).

That and it also lets you catch entire schools of fish from any fishing node in one cast so you don’t have to keep casting to get all the fish from that fishing node (in Broken Isles)

I also personally love its aesthetics and the glowy part on it (you can also get different color glows for it by doing a bunch of quests).

It has a whole bunch of other perks but that’s just to name a few.

There was a point to them, many points, but they were pruned lol

I got exalted with the Kalu’ak to get the Mastercraft Kalu’ak Fishing Pole and then immediately found out the Legion Artifact was better, but if the +15 skill truly doesn’t matter then I’m happy to just use the former and enjoy my Orc tusk aesthetic. ZUG ZUG.

Will keep the Underlight Angler in my inventory for Dragonflight if I need to be a K-mart clearance druid for crossing lakes. (After maxing out Margoss I don’t want to ever fish in the Broken Isles again, argus excluded ofc).

They should make a permanent gear slot for fishing rods so we can have the perks without swapping our weapons out.

They won’t even let us transmog our poles, I don’t think they’ll ever give us such a luxury :frowning:

i think they said in dragonflight they are gonna have slots for profession items actually that will auto equip whatever prof you’re doing, including some new gear that shows on your character

I love this idea.

What I do for now, is I put both my fishing and weapon icons on my bottom bar, right next to each other so I don’t even have to open my inventory or character profile to swap between them.

One thing that also helps me is adding all important items to my bottom side bar:

  • Katy Stampwhistle (for instant mail)

  • Talador Lunch toy (instant food / mana buff when out of food or drink)

  • Angler’s Fishing Raft (raft on water anywhere if you don’t have the Underlight Angler - you can fish while standing on this, check your mail via Katy, cast portals and eat and drink while on the raft - unlike regular mounts)

  • Whispers of Rai-Vosh toy (from WoD - free slow fall from anywhere in the world on any class)

  • Mobile Banking

  • Jeeves (or you can replace this slot with Auto-hammer for instant repairs from anywhere)

Bit messy perhaps but that’s what helps keep me organised and not having to keep opening my inventory or mount, toy, and profession tabs.

You can also get this from Drustvar by doing a quick quest (don’t worry, there’s no long quest line or anything). It increases your fishing by +5, from anywhere in the world, to speed things along. There are a whole bunch of other items that give you fishing buffs but this is by far the easiest one to get.

The only other thing you didn’t cover is the teleporting to the nearest fishing pool, which is frankly kinda worthless, because of the short range on it and then also the less aggro range when fishing thing, which doesn’t seem to do a whole lot.

But yeah, the angler is a fun fishing pole. I like to equip it and go fish out in the middle of a lake or something, instead of being on the shore.

i have yet to ever get the underlight angler on any toon… i’m so unachieving. it would be cool to get it. i should look up how to get it.

I think pretty much everything related to fishing skill has become irrelevant. The Legion artifact pole still has most of its perks (some of them have been nerfed over time), but as far as the actual numerical skill goes I don’t think any of it really matters anymore. Or at least, there isn’t much if any info on what it does, especially after each expansion got broken off into its own skill level.

The only thing the skill does now to my knowledge is reduce grey items you fish up. Does it get better if you use a plus 15 … not sure it may just cap at the fishing cap but it doesn’t hurt to use higher levels my kaulak fishing rod even has a fishing enchant,

You mean beyond bragging rights?

You macro that into a single button.

/equip 16 [button:1] Weapon name here
/equip 16 [button:2] Underlight Angler

Right click to equip the pole, left click to reequip your weapon.

There used to be but now for the most part it is largely up to a matter of preference. If anyone fishes on a regular basis it IS worth getting the Underlight Angler. I prefer to use my Kaluak fishing pole on my druid and my Jade dragon fishing pole on my monk, for style. But you don’t even need a fishing pole to fish anymore.

Bravo to all the fishing fans, I am one too.

I have not used a pole or fished in pools in ages. Nor have I used the buffs like the trawlers totem, tho I have them all. But I love fishing and wish that there was oh-so-much more designed into this current expansion.

My thumb button on my mouse is the shape-shift speedy boost from Ardenweald, when I fish I drag the icon pole over to that spot. Early in the expansion, the profit was there but there isn’t much to do now.

Some of them are just cool. And a nostalgia trip. Blump Family Fishing Pole for the win.
