Is there a point to attack from behind anymore?

I remember back in the day melee always had to attack from behind for maximum dps…something about expertise and not being able to parry or dodge your attacks…i forget now it’s been so long.

but today there doesn’t seem to be a point to standing behind the boss except for mechanics like frontal cones or swipes etc…from a dps standpoint it doesn’t affect it anymore does it. You can pretty much stand anywhere as melee?

Doesnt it increase your Crit change or something? or did i made that up?

Also havent checked in ages, but i think Sub Rogue benefits from attacking from behind.

I am not quite sure about the crit…perhaps you’re right but I honestly don’t know…and yes I think sub rogues may be the only melee that actually benefits from it…in fact they suffer quite a bit if they’re not back stabbing

You can still get parried if you attack from the front

Parry is why you want to attack from behind. It is still a thing.

ah okay thx for the replies…wasn’t sure if it was still a thing…I generally attack from behind anyway cuz force of habit but it’s nice to know that when I reposition I should always strive to get back behind the mob

Yup, this. I was treated like I was the weird one for attacking behind in Dawnbreaker on second boss. Full melee group, all of them in front of the boss with the tank.

I think only raid bosses can parry frontal attacks?

I don’t think dungeon bosses can. But as a general rule, you really shouldn’t stand in front of the boss.

lmao.

short answer: for most classes no, there is literally no point anymore in current retail

long answer: for one rogue spec and one ability in that rogue spec yeah, but thats about it. in retail its not realistic to try to dps from behind all the time, things are just way too hectic with too much to dodge, avoid, and stay out of.

and the dps loss is so minimal as to be unnoticeable. but dont take my word for it just go watch youtube videos from the worlds best MDI players. those guys who play wow for a living on esports teams, they dont give a flying frick about standing behind mobs to dps.

as for bosses, you will generally always be behind them anyway to avoid cleaves or frontals, otherwise it doesnt matter on them either.

Bosses can parry you but that’s about it.
Setting up a big, meaty Mortal strike and tank spins it at the last second, and your massive hit turns into a whiff.

Feels bad man.

Classic I think it was a crit if they were sitting, and you couldnt block, dodge or parry if you werent facing your attacker which is why people tried to hit your backside. In retail though? I dont think it matters at all besides what someone else said in here about rogue abilities.

Matters in raids, less to nill in dungeons.

No but you still get auto 100% critted if you’re sitting down when you’re attacked. Some of the last vestiges of RPG mechanics left in this game.

I tend to stand behind the boss because of mechanics.

Oh wow I forgot about this.

I think the main thing is parry. Can’t get parried from behind.

White melee damage is pretty inconsequential to most specs though. So basically, unless you have some kind of auto attack procs that don’t happen if your attack gets parried – it doesn’t really matter much from a DPS standpoint.

I like to stand with the tank personally, unless the enemies cleave/do frontal cones on the tank.

A lot of tanks don’t really position well for people behind the enemies, so in some cases it’s safer to be near the tank to avoid floor puddles… and they only position themselves so they’re safe. Just gotta pick your poison I guess lol. Either nowhere safe to stand behind the enemies, or dodging cleaves and doing mabye a little lower DPS.

Bosses can still dodge and parry your attacks. They have a 6% dodge and parry chance which means your attacks have a 6% chance to miss.

They can’t dodge or parry from behind.

That’s sitting in pvp. If a player is sitting another player will guarantee a crit on them.

You always should anyway. You don’t want to get smacked by a tankbuster because you were out of position because of laziness, do you? Save your tank and healer some grief and always position yourself behind the mobs.

It is 1% chance to get parried for each level the enemy is above you, up to a max of 3%.

So dungeon bosses have a 2% chance to parry, raid bosses have 3%.

It use to. I don’t know if that’s still a thing tho.

your abilities can get parried too. It isn’t just auto attacks.

Had some bosses parry my execute or rampage.
