With how the new Chromie time is working, I rarely see any new player icons in the world as an opted mentor. At level 50 we aren’t allowed back into Chromie time where the new players are so unless they make it though and hit 50 there’s no way for us to find/help these newcomers outside of when they’re jumping to the city. On top of that, we can’t enable this mentoring system until we are actually level 50. When I’m leveling I want to see/help new players but with the current iteration, I can’t.
So, as someone who meets the very limited requirements to actually be a mentor, it would be really nice to have the toggle apply to my account rather than just my character/level. I would like this option because while I’m leveling in Chromie time I can better assist the new players who are coming into the game. I think that would be better overall for this system to work as it’s intended.
It would also be great if there were some sort of up/downvote for advice in the newcomer chat. I’ve definitely seen some trolls trying to game some new players. I guess that’s hard to avoid but a voting system of some kind would be helpful. If you get so many downvotes you won’t be able to mentor anymore. It would even be nice to get some sort of visual that the newcomers see on my character name that lets them know I’m valued as a mentor. (Something like the Overwatch voting? I would actually love this for WoW dungeons and pairing. Put toxic people with other toxic people!)
Along with this, I think it would be really cool to have a type of mentor option that groups you with new players in dungeons as a guide. I think this would be a welcomed introduction for many new subscribers rather than jumping into dungeons with a full group of speed demon, elitist levelers. I know that when I’ve played other mmo’s I certainly felt out of place and definitely felt that performance anxiety.
I know this system is new and very much still something that can be altered and changed, but as it stands right now I don’t feel it has a very large impact on any new players’ experience overall. I do, however, think this is an excellent step for a few changes to the community dynamic in WoW that is very much needed.
Edit: I guess new players to WoW are just sent straight to BfA so no wonder I never saw anyone. I think most of the people who already play WoW are likely tired of leveling in BfA and are questing in Chromie time where we aren’t really interacting with new players

This is probably the first post I’ve seen in a week or two that I actually agree with. Account wide mentor status and dungeon mentoring would be a nice change, and anything that involves muting people trolling new players or being toxic is a plus to me.

I’m a mentor, I have never seen a new player icon out in the world.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, I haven’t seen anyone use the chat either.

This was my expectation :-/
Precisely, all the new players are in Chromie time! It’s so odd
Edit: I guess all the players are in BfA where all the vets of WoW are tired of questing
…is anyone even using the Mentor system???
I was extremely keen about becoming a mentor initially but the fact that it was quite literally just for extremely new players and not for people learning about max-level content kinda turned me off from the whole thing, but I don’t think a single person has ever mentioned it until this post.

If they are new enough to have the icon, they won’t be in Chromie time they will be in BFA. Keep in mind, they only keep the icon until they hit level 20… then they lose the icon and are booted from the chat.

I was deciding whether or not to join the Mentor System, I’m wondering if the amount of of new players will spike up once Shadowlands officially launches.
In Shadowlands, new players will need to go through Battle for Azeroth as their first leveling experience.
I feel like Mentor should just also be a Helper in general if that’s the case, leveling is so fast you’d skim past level 20 in a blink of an eye.

Oh, I didn’t know that actually. Maybe their murloc flag should be kept a little longer :o I did level in BfA recently and I never saw any new players there either
Maybe everyone was above level 20 and i didn’t even know they were new.
It shouldn’t be tied to level, I think more of WoW account age or play time or something.

I agree. I kind of think the new player status should keep until they hit 50 at least.

Not a bad idea. I like it. I think most veterans of WoW are more likely to be forgiving to newer players over the more casual play types? Hm

I like this discussion!! I keep forgetting to opt-in to the mentor program thing.
But I definitely agree with a lot that’s been said here so far. These are great ideas and it sounds like the mentor program could use some QoL changes!
I guess with this way of leveling there will always be issues. If new players are always sent to level in the newest expansion, vets will be tired of the new expansion and be leveling in Chromie time, generally. So we aren’t going to run into one another all too often…

The mentor system is a good step in the right direction, but it does need help to make it more impactful. Your idea to put a system where the mentor go with new players in group content would be super great like a different lfg tab for mentor/new players, will make the new players more comfortable and not be scare of joining a group and have fun.
I would like to see a button for new player when they need help or have question on something that they press and a mentor show up to help him out, new players can have some anxiety talking in a channel, while being one on one is less stressful.

Honestly, the entire system needs to be revamped IMO. As it stands this system is just a total waste of resources because so few new players actually use it, and level 20 is something like a two or three hour investment.
