I'm planning on rolling Warrior in Classic and know tanks are usually in high demand because they were the best ones then, was it very complicated or just like it is today but slower?

Classic is an easier game than retail is. Tanking is like it is today, hold aggro and manage your defensives.

Clearly someone who never actually tanked in vanilla.
Warrior tank is the only viable raid tank (I guess some will choose a druid for AOE Pulls, but again Warrior is better). Druid can pass as a 5 man tank, but many groups will pass and wait for a warrior.
Warrior tanking is very different in vanilla then current retail. You have no main AOE ability in defensive stance, the best AOE threat is to actually spam battle shout. Threat is measured in strange ways in vanilla and the act of Buffing another player (5 in total) actually equates to far more threat then using demoralizing shout.
My recommendation is Range Pull - Battle Shout - Begin tab sundering targets + Heroic Strike when available. Also always mark your kill target, so that when DPS is on the wrong one and pulls agro you can yell.
Anyways I'm sure more "Vanilla Experts" will chime in on how its easier then retail, but believe me they are incorrect.

All of that is easy if you know your class. And YES. Vanilla was and still will be easier than retail.
There's a video of a warrior AKF'd while having Sunder Armor being cast via a macro for him on YouTube. In short, no, tanking wasn't hard in Vanilla. Leveling was hard. The hardest thing about raiding in Vanilla was getting 40 people to show up on a consistent basis.
Not really. Pulling is the difficult part.
Well, dpsing is the easiest, healing is a little bit harder and tanking is the hardest.

Please post back to this thread when you are fed up with all warriors sucking at tanking in vanilla. (if you even plan to play). Won't take you long.
depends on what you define as hard. I know that tanking in wotlk is different from tanking in vanilla as an example. Some mechanics were less demanding on timing but relied more on consistent rotation and threat management.
i think it boils down to what you had to work with. as mentioned above, shouting was used very often and taunts some times never even worked when switching aggro. i don't remember if thunderclap gave substantial threat at all as it was the only aoe that warriors had.
druid tanking was fairly simple, however the gear options were biased toward stam and dodge as well as armor and resistances. there was a cooldown on growl and they had 1 aoe taunt that had a long cool down, leaving them to spam swipe.
paladin tanking was more mana management if i remember correctly. righteous fury increased threat as well as holy damage, i don't know their rotation and half remember their talents, ie reckoning and judgements.

If everyone is focus skull and ccing right, it's easy. But waaaay less room for error, much more unforgiving, someone screws it up you wipe. And repair bills can be a huge pain compared to now.
Charge, thunderclap, go to defensive stance. Sunder armor tab sunder armed tab sunder armor tab, with your extra rage use cleave. Go back to main target and unload with your High threat attacks and so on. It's a lot of tabbing but pretty fun and easy. The thing that made a warrior tank good is knowing how to balance everything during encounters and proper use of cool downs. Stuff like spell reflect, shield bash, shield block, last stand, shield wall, and knowing how to stance dance were key. Obviously coming to raids ready is big too like having flasks, food, enchants all helped a lot in end game. It's certainly not for everyone but if you can handle it it's really fun.
Damn, how much you thinking your going to tank?

Mostly spot on, but I disagree about 5 mans. Early game I find that druids are better tanks. They seems to have an easier time holding threat on multiple mobs, and are much easier to heal. Paladins are also capable dungeon tanks, their biggest drawback is mana issues. The lack of a taunt isn't that big of a deal unless you are in a group with terrible dps, or don't know how to generate aggro. Taunt shouldn't be used that much anyways, if you are relying on it to hold aggro you are doing something wrong....or dps isn't managing aggro. Paladins also have the easiest time tanking multiple mobs.
Based on pserver experience people will take whatever tank they can find. Druid and paladin tanks have become fairly common.
100% agree with the rest. For the short period I played BFA, tanking is mindless. I just ran into a group of mobs and did my rotation, didn't matter what target I attacked, with all of the aoe it was impossible to lose aggro.

Shame shame!
Everyone knows,
Ego will hold agro over anything!
If your going to tank in classic, I would recommend a giant ego!

Yeah, because the tc gonnas break my sap and his sheep.
It's certainly more engaging overall, the only thing retail tanking has going on is having to watch timers and pop defensives for big hits.
Harder than retail, so if that's what you're used to you'll have some adjusting to do. You're going to be busy. Tanking multiple mobs is where most of the difficulty is. Getting sunders up on them and maintaining thunder clap is important. If the healer or DPS doesn't manage their aggro at the start of a pull, you'll end up running around chasing mobs down and taunting a lot. That's why communication in groups was very important in classic.
