I second details. Change sucks but both skada and recount are practically dead in the grave. Not to mention that details simply is usually the most accurate unfortunately as well.
I can give it another try. Just remember last time I tried it out it had way to many options and felt convoluted for me with bloat I didn’t want

last time I recall at the very least is you pretty much just install the thing, you skip the little tutorial and you drag it to some corner on your UI. It should do everything else without any input. There are a lot of options available but you can ignore that, it’s usually just used to track certain encounters, interrupts, buffs ect if you are a nerd.
Also in your addons options, be sure and JUST have the checkmark next to Details Damage Meter.
All the other stuff (encounter breakdown, compare 2.0, the plugin options… you can turn all of that off.

Fun fact. “Skada” is swedish for damage. Meaning Skada damage meter is actually called “Damage Damage meter”.

Recount, DBM and Grid were my go to addons.
For those days when 1 damage just isn’t enough.

That was my experience with Details too. It was very annoying during the time I did use it. I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t worth the time and effort to figure it out when all I wanted was a basic damage meter. I uninstalled it and never looked back.
Other addon devs have created forks of Skada for those of us that still use it. I used one for DF and now there’s a new one for TWW.

There’s another recent fork as well that I saw while searching for Skada on Curse: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/skada-reforged-11-0. That one has basically no downloads compared to the other version of Skada I linked to above.
I’m not sure which version will be updated more reliably long term.

So much this.
Everytime I tried to use Details, I saw the henious font and ridiculous options and terribad UI and my eyes immediately glazed over and it got promptly uninstalled.
It wouldn’t be so bad is there was a button I could press that was called “IDGAF, just give me a small box that will show mine and everyone else’s in my group damage please”. But apparently that is too difficult to code for the Details dev. Better throw in another dozen options for the meme lords that use ElvUI instead.

skada has long been abadoned. I think the addon author quit wow?
You don’t have to use any of those options. By default it just shows a simple damage meter with a row of buttons right on the top to reset it or switch it to healing or w/e. Its no different than recount or skada unless you choose to dig into it more.
I disable all of the options except what I need. Literally all of them. Most of them are considered separate addons so it’s easy to disable them from the addons menu. I literally disable everything except Details and Details Storage.
