I’m pretty sure it’s legal as long as it’s not real money but I’ve heard people say it’s a ToS violation. Just curious on this topic.
As long as it’s not IRL money, it’s never been an issue.
It’s more so a trust factor. Blizz can’t really do anything if you get scammed since you chose to willingly give them gold.
Yeah, I can’t imagine getting scammed worth of 100k gold for a name. But I appreciate your answer to my question.
The issue i ran into with this was trust, it’s hard to get two strangers to agree on how to go about the transaction, people aren’t especially keen on handing over a heap of gold and hoping that you’ll delete the character as agreed.
Unless something has changed in recent years, names are locked to your account and remain unavailable to others on the server for a significant amount of time even after deleting the character.
That’s only if they’re above a certain level, level 1 characters being deleted frees up the name immediately (can verify as i have done this myself).
It’s not a violation, just unsupported.
I see you’re from Moon Guard. I don’t scam people Just ask Lottie, Sibyl and Sidney (three names I sold on our realm.)
Just ask Lottie, Sibyl and Sidney (three names I sold on our realm.)
May i ask what you sold them for? I have a few little level ones spread around the place with some decent names (Naughty, Vanish, Iol, Blood etc etc) but never really thought about selling them, sometimes when a friend is making a new alt i give them a list of the names i have reserved and just delete it for them (for free of course).
I sold those three for 500k each.
Well done!
There’s a few things here to note:
- As folks have said, this is unsupported - if you get scammed, you lose your gold/name and nothing can be done about it so be exceedingly cautious
Even with proof of there being an agreeement there’s very little anyone at Blizzard can do except delete gold and/or items
- Virtually selling anything in-game for another in-game currency is allowed, although you have to do your marketing in the specific Services-channel; anywhere else and its a reportable offense for advertisement
- I said ‘virtually’ because there is one exception to this - you cannot sell or buy a rank in PvP, getting carried is fine (sort of, there’s asterisk to this as well but in general it isn’t reportable) but paying to get a rank is a reportable offense (used to be so bad that folks would have their accounts terminated IIRC, but that might have been from folks doing this en’masse and repeatedly)
I believe that’s essentially all the caveats when it comes to selling in-game stuff for in-game gold; of course no trading for outside of the game services or money is allowed but that’s stuff folks should know at this point
One of those things that, may not be “against the rules” but, certainly comes across as a jerk-of-all-jerks move.
Everything about it smacks of “it’s MY BALL, I’m going hOMee!” just a childish and insipid approach to the most basic aspect of the game.
But people do sure love to hide behind that “It’s not TECHNICALLY against the rules” defense.

No it is not. Most view it as highly unethical though and it is a very good way to get extremely hated really fast so just don’t expect to sell a name you took here and not expect some major backlash from it. That is one of the quickest ways to get someone to permanently hate you btw so I would advise against doing it if you can.
I think that’s a little uncalled for
It’s one of just other 13 opinions posted so far.
Nothing about my opinion is egregious. There is such a thing as decorum.
In 2019 the following was provided by a Blue:
…The character name goes on a cooldown for 30 days where only your Battle.net account will have access to it.
Dunno if that is still the case. If it is, buying/selling a name seems somewhat problematic.
That’s only if your placeholder is above level 30 or something like that.
A deleted level one frees the name immediately.
It’s only like that above a certain level, deleted level 1’s give up the name immediately.
(beat me to it lol)
Anything you can do in game with in game currencies or services is within the ToS.
And that includes addons, those are in game.
The minute you get an external anything to do something it can be against the ToS.
How does selling a name work? Even if you delete a character, the name is still locked to your account for a period of time.
