Is rogue mostly an auto attack class

I’m new and tried out some rogue, and it feels like auto attacks are a major source of damage because of energy regen. Is this correct, or does energy regeneration go bonkers high level where it would allow button presses on cooldown?

Yes, auto attacks are a huge part of rogue damage because of how they interact with other abilities, mainly poison procs.

Energy management is probably the core of all three rogue specs. It does get easier with certain talents and more haste. Energy is the rogue equivalent of a cast time.

^ this 100%.

Too add to this, rogues are very gear dependent classes so the difference is night and day. I’m still catching up on gear but even going from 12% haste to 24% haste is a major change.

No, it’s not. Based on APL written for dmg simulations, this is how many actions per minute each class/spec has performing their priority rotation (according to that APL).

Monk Brewmaster 57
Rogue Outlaw 56
Rogue Subtlety 54
Warrior Fury 52
DH Havoc 52
Mage Fire 48
Mage Frost 48
Hunter Surv 48
Rogue Assassination 47
Paladin Ret 47
Hunter BM 46
Monk WW 44
Shaman Enh 44
Priest Shadow 43
DK Frost 40
DK Unholy 40
Warlock Demo 40
Shaman Ele 38
Druid Feral 38
Warlock Aff 47
Hunter Marks 36
Warrior Arms 36
Mage Arcane 32
Warlock Destruction 32

So while it might appear based on logs, etc that white melee hits make up a lot of a rogue’s damage, you can see that they have a relatively high number of actions that they must hit each minute, compared to other classes, to perform their dps rotation in the optimal manner.

White melee damage is a bulk of rogue damage. However I think the OP is leveling a new rogue and his question was more directed at the leveling process and not amps at max level.

This is correct. I was giving it a try, and with the rate of energy regeneration and how much auto attacking I seemed to be doing I was wondering if that was the playstyle. Trying to put the skills and talents into context, especially when I look at skills like slice and dice that’s just a auto attack steroid.

It sounds like the haste stat effects energy regeneration, is this correct? I saw the talent for 10% more in the assassin talent tree, and was wondering if energy ramps up as you level or if it stays about the same.

Haste does affect energy regen. At max level it starts to feel good around 16-18% haste.

At endgame in gear it feels a lot better than leveling.

If you’re leveling as sub (you should be) auto attacks are a pretty minor damage source once you get a few talents. You basically just shadowstrike + eviscerate + MFD Eviscerate while using dance as needed for mobs that don’t get 2 shot or if you needed to use mark to get your slice and dice rolling instead of for burst.

20% haste is a good place to be. I’m super casual though

Yes, but not really. 10% haste equates to 1 single extra energy per second. So if you had 20% haste you would have 2 energy extra per second which means every 20 seconds you would have 40 extra energy which is almost enough for a single cast of sinister strike. Stacking haste for raw energy regen is a huge waste of time.

The useful part of haste is it’s ability to speed procs up that are tied to energy / resource gain indirectly, for example;

Sub - Increases combo point generation through shadow techniques.
Sin - Increases energy regen by allowing your bleeds to tick faster on poisoned targets. Each tick gives you energy.
Outlaw - Increases energy regen through combat potency by attacking faster.

Most of rogues energy is recovered through procs like these, cooldowns, and talents. Regardless of haste.

Thank you Okiepokie for that explanation. All I know is 20% haste feels good

Thank you everyone. This helps me understand what is going on.

I’ve been playing for almost 20 years and I have no idea what’s going on. All these kids and their darned hoverboards, zooming all over the place, always standing around in my lawn… What was I talking about?

Oh yeah, that’s right!

When I was a kid, the anime was different than it is now. Back then we used to watch the anime with giant robots not these high school girls that run fast and shoot magic lasers out of their leotards. In fact, I remember one time when I was in school, there was a teacher who used to write on their overhead projector little cartoons to help the kids remember things. My mom would always pack me a peanut butter and jelly. Nowadays, these kids are only asking for hazelnut spread and say mean spirited things like “don’t you want some marmalade or something with that”… I’m not that old!

Assassins is terrible to level as, it’s so energy starved at low levels you are basically just cycling ruptures. Outlaw is far and away the better leveling spec imo.

Interesting… looks like I’m a 44-48 kind of player.
