Is Randomized Loot Supposed to Make You Upset?

I just returned to the game a couple weeks ago, and today before the reset I ran a +6 Shrine of Storms. I log in after the reset, and excitedly await my cache because it will have a 425 ilvl gear piece, which is an upgrade for any possible gear that I am wearing, except one item, that is ilvl 430, and is my bracers. I just so happened to open up the cache to 425 bracers, which is obviously a downgrade from my 430 bracers, but could have been an upgrade in all 15 of my other possible equippable slots of gear. Doing the math, the chances I would get downgrade bracers instead of upgradeable anything else is a 6.66 (repeating of course) percent chance at misfortune. I was told randomized loot would create moments of excitement, but when things like these happen at very low chances and as my first cache to ever open on that character, it feels like it’s more than just a coincidence.

It’s supposed to make you feel like you won the lottery when you finally do get a piece of usable gear. They’re trying to lower people’s expectations.

Yeah, I regularly get the one piece that would not be an upgrade out of the chest, when I could get basically anything else that would be. With the exception of rings and cloaks, because they don’t really have spec versions like other pieces, so I regularly get rings or cloaks that are awesome by ilvl, but clearly designed for a whole other class.

Welcome back to rng on top of rng on top of rng.

Sure it’s an MMO but Blizzard seems to have taken it to the extreme.

Good luck.

They’re trying to mitigate this in SL by having the chest drop multiple pieces of RNG loot where you select one. They’re also not a fan of how the chest sort’ve screws you like this.

Edit: It’s funny cause I had the exact same experience 3 weeks in a row with bracers on my DH.

Or the same item 6x over on my main, almost in a row. That kind of did it for me. With napkin math it made me realize 1 of 2 things: I am wearing a tinfoil hat, or it’s a built-in system to reduce progression. I would lean towards the latter.

It’s best to keep your expectations low for the weekly cache. Minimize the disappointment.

I do wish all the content in the game gave both random loot, and a currency i can use so i can eventually buy something specific. The titan residium is a good system imho, i just wish you could buy all slots not just the azerite slots.

I could not imagine the madness that ensued

Oddly enough, I regularly got pieces I needed within about 5 minutes of playing in D3.

Personally i’ve always seen the weekly chest as more of a bonus. A chance to get something really cool but, certainly not something i expect. If I get an upgrade, sweet an upgrade for doing something I was already going to do in m+ if I don’t? Oh well, I can always run another m+ to get some loot.

Welcome back to World of RNGcraft where my main has gotten a piece of gear for the same slot they don’t need an upgrade in for nearly two months and it won’t be changing. xD

This is the end result. If I expect to get nothing I need, albeit usually true, I tend to not feel so disappointed.

Best to aim for the floor with expectations until they give the whole Shadowlands treatment of 6 items to choose from. I may be an idiot for thinking this but ‘what if’ we see that and it’s all the same item? XD

Beyond maddening. It’s that moment where you have to decide whether the content is worth it - it really is, but have a glass is half full mentality and eventually gear will drop.

It took them long enough to do something about it, all along claiming it was working as intended.

I just wish it was coming in 8.3, but I wonder if it’ll require an infrastructure change to implement.

They hate their own players.

Quite sad but true.

I’ve been praying to RNGesus for a new shield in my caches. It gets worse when you get the same item multiple times (which has happened to me.

They should redesign the chest to be more of a cardboard box, because a giant treasure chest implies something good will be in there.
Or at least you would think it would have something good in a Vault of Kings of a giant Pyramid city
