This question is directed at officers and raid leaders in raiding guilds. Is it strictly necessary for a player to reliably be on for every raid? Do any guilds accept recruits who are capable raiders but who can’t make it to every last raid because often real life gets in the way?
I’m just finding myself in a situation of having a job, having a significant other, having a social life, and balancing WoW against that is tough because I’m now at the phase with my gear where I need raids to continue making progress. But I can’t commit to a weekly time window to be left available for raiding every single week in perpetuity.
What would you recommend for someone in my situation: who knows how to play well, who has preraid gear, and who has real life get in the way of a weekly commitment to the game, but often has time to get on for raid-length periods of time, just not always at the same time each week?
Yo but pugs can be sooooo bad. Wish I could just be a fill-in raider with a competent guild. The sort of raider like “damn one of our raiders couldn’t make it this week, but I see Khaun’s on should we invite him?”
If you want to collect loot from a raid you are expected to use it to help future raids clear better and faster. If you can only show up for 1/4 the raids what are you doing to help?

Well, you’re helping… 1/4 of the time. That is still progression isn’t it?
When 3/4 of the raid is ahead of you? You are now replaced by someone who will be there for every raid

Yeah, I can see why that would get me replaced. Although I do feel confident I could be top 10 in dps even in just preraid bis in lots of guilds unless we’re talking about a very very serious raiding guild with the majority having excellent gear and a firm grasp of their optimal rotation.
Any chances your inconsistency is consistently inconsistent?

You’re going to join a raiding guild and not show up to the raids? That’s about as stupid as trying to drown a fish.

You’ll have a much better time once zg and aq20 are out. Both are fairly easy to pug, and since they’re 20 mans you’re not competing with as many people for loot.

Way to hear what I’m not saying. What I’m saying is: “I have these constraints on my available raid time. How can I get around that and still raid?”
“Significant other” you mean a wifey poo?
If you want gear you need to have very high attendance. If you want to be part of a guild and can’t commit to very high attendance don’t expect to get gear over anyone who can always show up.

Did you just assume that this persons significant other identifies as a wife? YOU CAN’T DO THAT!!!
Not a wife, sir. Wifey poo!

It isn’t necessary but it’s all about expectation and quality. There’s 40 people in a raid and the other 39 people have a level of expectation each raid.
How many people will show up for Mondays raid? Are they geared? Do they know how to play? There’s only 40 slots in each MC raid; Why should Khaun take up another persons slot when he isn’t as reliable as them.
Anyway the solution to your problem OP is to find a guild who does MC casually or find PUGS.

That exists, but as you said it would only be when someone can’t make it.
So if you are only on 1/3rd of the time for raids and the guild only needs someone 1/4th of the time… then you are looking at an MC run once every 3 months or so.

Yeah so essentially I guess there’s three things that make a raider desirable in this economy:
- Gear
- Ability to play
- Availability
If my gear is pure pre-raid bis and my ability is good, I gotta find a guild that will forgive my sometimes bad availability when life gets too hectic.
Ditch the SO and your social life.
Tada! You have time to raid.
