Is paladin worth playing?

Reading through this forum, it’s depressing…

to be fair, reading through most classes forums will be depressing.

imo paladin is totally worth playing, but I’m a bit biased since I don’t really play any other class.

monk forum is pretty positive. but all the hate against paladins mobility really makes me not want to waste time.

well, are you looking to do pve or pvp?

in pve our limited mobility is more of an inconvenience than a dealbreaker, divine steed will generally allow you to dodge any mechanics you need to.

as for pvp, yeah our mobility isn’t great. We have some tools to compensate, but when those are on CD we have issues catching people.

pve, i do lol every time i see a paladin running slowly to catch up to the group. it’s a little depressing to watch.

pvp, its something i need to dabble in but i also know monk compares fairly well WITH mobility (the under-representation of monk also makes it interesting)

eh prot seems good holy and ret seem to be kinda in a rut/ identity crises.

The legion redesigns did not do us well.

Id say try it and if u like it great keep goin with it, but most pallys are sadly looking forward to next expansion already, our class feels really meh.

So much this. I’ve been looking for a new alt for a while. Narrowed it down to either priest, shammy, pally or warr. The one constant throughout all my research was just how absolutely terrible those classes all were going by their respective sub-forums. My advice to the OP is as follows:

  • Which class of mogs are you really after?
  • What roles do you want to be able to play? dps, tanking, healing. What format of that role do you want? Ranged? Melee?
  • Have you tried actually playing one of the classes you’re interested in? Start with a class trial and take a look at the spell-book for anything interesting to you. But note the class trial isn’t great in and of itself. Try actually leveling one till at least around 30-40. It won’t take long.
  • Have you seen anyone in-game on one the classes you’re interesting in do anything you’d like to do?
  • How will the class behave at end-game? E.g. On my 399 mage, I still need to wait for a meatshield before I can solo certain enemies in arathi or darkshore etc. Meanwhile my lower ilvl HD can do it all solo. My DH can also pull half an IE and blow it all down without issue. My mage just can’t do that.
  • Is one of the mog sets you want for your new character reliant on downing mythic KJ? That’s not gonna happen. Not with 99% of pugs anyway.
  • What classes do you already have maxed out? Do you want something melee since you already have ranged? etc.
  • Other stuff i’m forgetting.

For PVE content Paladin is Middle of the pack and viable in every spec. If you are aren’t someone very hardcore and pushing keys more than 15+ playing paladin isn’t problem. Holy Paladin was very boring, but in 8.1.5 Glimmer built become very popular and fun. Playing Prot is Fun too compare to other Tank.
Whatever crying you are seeing is Forum, all for PVP mobility of Ret Paladin which is very Poorly Designed. For PVE paladin is a solid Class.

Any version or build of holy is viable. The developers are having issues though.

Prot is solid. Little lacking in aoe and snap aggro but very strong mitagation wise.

Ret is a mid of the pack dps with great burst.

None have the most engaging playstyle, but that’s all specs/classes right now honestly.

So it’s fun and viable, just depends on how hardcore you are.

We have a kinda new development team and they are slow with feed back. But promising big things in 8.2.

Paladin is in pretty good spot imo I play prot and ret and I feel pretty good in raids and m+. As far as prot goes I feel like I’m cheating sometimes with BoP and final stand talent and being able to sustain myself with strong CDs and a damn near LoH with crit from light of the protector and wings, to combat being lower on dps than some tanks pick up seraphim which also helps defensively cause it buffs all secondary stats by like 1000. Ret has amazing burst especially in reaping packs I can pull near 200k burst damage with CDs

(only talking about pve here, and almost exclusively m+) Prot is very strong, and slightly underrated IMO. Ret is simple, even a bit a boring, but still strong dps with the right traits. It’s aoe burst for reaping is amazing. Holy is very boring to me personally, but its good enough. Havent really touched it in 8.1 much, rsham is way more enjoyable, but holy feels more powerful.

You seem hung up on our mobility. For keys, ive never had an issue with it, especially with Cavalier. Ya, if we dont have steed charges and need to walk somewhere, we’ll be slow, but so will Dk’s. In pvp I’m sure its brutal but pve its not noticeable to me. I feel my biggest weakness more than anything else is not having anything like a DK grip. But even that can be solved with LoS pulls or well timed avenger shield on casters.

We could sit here all day analyzing what other classes are better at certain things, but pally is a great all arounder. I’ve said this all through bfa, and believe its still true; paladin is good at everything and great at nothing.

Solution: don’t read the forum. People who are happy with their class / spec / game don’t come to the forum, so you will only see those that are unhappy. It’s a terrible metric for how many people are actually enjoying it.

I haven’t really played holy/ret at a high level, I’ve mainly stuck to prot. If your looking to tank id suggest it. Lots of people will say its boring because its just rotating cooldowns but prot has a lot of group utility which i enjoy and it also can cheese mechanics which is something i really enjoy doing.

Comparing any class to Monk mobility is silly. Try a DK if you think Pally is too slow for you.

Double steed is usually more then enough to keep up with people in PvE. Buy some %150 speed potions for the very few times you lag behind. Ret is fun in PvE, but mythic+ groups don’t “need” a ret. So for me at least it’s hit or miss on getting into groups. I’m mainly a PvP player and I’m not enjoying PvP so I haven’t logged in for a while.

Paladin is rewarding to me. It has a very well defined class fantasy, albeit this may be a detractor for some (RP folks, mostly, since there’s little wiggle-room for interpretation compared to a, say, warrior).

It’s a relatively simple class to play effective but has a lot of niche group utility (ret): cleanse; physical immunity/threat dump in Blessing of Protection; relatively big, group heal in Word of Glory (talent), small but worthwhile single-target buffs (blessing of wisdom and blessing of kings); epic emergency heal (lay on hands); relatively reliable stun; good to very good burst.

Class aesthetics are personal preference (if you like flash, paladin’s have that and then some). But, like their class fantasy, their transmog have a good cohesion to them (much like warlocks and priests, I think).

For me, they hit the spot for a righteous, self-less warrior-poet type character.

Plate dps in general is in a mediocre spot this expansion. Doesn’t help that for the major content that blizzard is pushing in m+ that rogue and demon hunter are beyond broken, but yeah war, pally and dk dos all have issues. If you’re that worried join the DH invasion taking over the game. It’s funny to get a pug for your key and see 15+ demon hunters apply.

paladin is a strong easy to play spec. Not only will you be competitive in all content, but you can be the factor that turns a losing battle into a winning one. It has low mobility but the best defensives in the game and easily one of the more forgiving specs considering you have multiple ways to recover from a bad move in a fight . Honestly only points where ret paladin doesnt seem like a god are the levels of play most never even see. Everyone i know who plays ret in game absolutely loves it.

Play monk, DH or rogue if you want a happy life.
