Is modern WoW actually fun for you guys?

Not “Oh it’s fun because of my guild” or any of that, is the game itself fun for you guys? 'cause where I always loved WoW (up until WoD prepatch), I just can’t find the will to play for more than a week or two every few months anymore

The game is extremely easy now, even though I know people will act like it’s not. Raids and dungeons are very simplistic, and the classes are so mindless I’m pretty sure I could train a hamster to 60+ parse.

The content is extremely repetitive, the dungeons are not all that creative and feel very samey, same goes for the raids (minus a boss or two here and there).

Like, I finally got to do my first mythic raid that wasn’t just the first few bosses yesterday (Brood), and it was just boring beyond the first few pulls, because mythic really doesn’t add that much to the fight.

I’m just struggling to find the “fun” factor in modern WoW. Does one even exist?

The story will is what keeps me here, I’m looking forward to what new adventures and new characters we meet next expansion!

I’m still quite invested and enjoying myself otherwise I don’t think I’d be here

No, we are all playing this game because it’s a prison and we are threatened to be here

I play the first patch, quit, then come back at the end of the expansion to blast some easy dungeons and farm mounts

Running 5 mans is fun.

I want everything in WoW to take less time. It’s sooooooo time consuming. Getting a DPS alt geared in Retail is insane, it’s why I don’t have a pure DPS alt. I won’t have an alt anymore in DF since TWW is so close.

Oh this is gonna be fun.

Different strokes for different folks. I personally like healing m+ and fine that gameplay engaging enough to have fun. I also dont find the dungeons simplistic enough and would prefer they were straightforward with less mob packs. So I personally wouldn’t call then simplistic.

You mean…like its always been? I’ve been playing since TBC and the gameplay loop has only barely changed. The main difference between now and what it’s been like for close to a decade is less maintenance per week for AP. Not a loss imo.

I dont mythic raid, but maybe don’t start mythic in earnest 2-3 months before the next expansion?

Honestly? Not really. Nostalgia keeps me here and I stick around for the community for the most part. But the game itself? It isn’t a bad game, but I have not enjoyed it at its core for a long time. People can yap all they want about Cataclysm, but that’s the last time it felt like an RPG for me. Between having stats that mattered and questing having its challenges, well, it was a good time.

I agree with you. The game is incredibly easy. You can jump to level thirty in a day and probably higher if you don’t sleep or log off. The world isn’t very dangerous anymore and you don’t often have to think about how you are going to approach a group of enemies. Mines and caves are no longer sources of stress as you race respawn times to get that one node or quest item. My new pair of gloves that I loot don’t matter much and will be easily replaced while leveling. Important skills like polymorph and sap don’t see that much use in group content, because everyone can face roll a lot of dungeons.

I do think that the game is far more accessible now, and that is not a bad thing in and of itself, however for people that do enjoy the older elements of the game, be it important stats, world danger, slower leveling or gear that actually feels important (if you are a top tier raider or PvP player, of course gear will be important to you), it feels a little stale. And yes, I know “If you like it so much, then go play classic.” is the immediate yapper’s response, but classic’s community is not retail’s community. For someone that enjoys role play and keeping up with relevant content, going back in time gives me a few smiles, but that’s just it. It’s a visit to the past. There is no progression of the world or characters in lore. It’s just a reminder of what was, and that’s why I don’t play classic. I want to move forward with the game. Unfortunately, moving forward has the reality of “deal with it”, so I do.

Point is any time I complain about the game being easy, people go off about how mythic raids are so hard and complicated and bla bla… they’re just not though. I’ve now done the first few bosses of every DF raid and now a later boss that’s considered hard – they’re just boring. I genuinely don’t understand how it takes guilds weeks to clear mythic, and I absolutely don’t understand guilds being unable to clear heroic like day one.

Well said. Like, I’m down with adding things like LFR and the story mode raids, but everything is just nonthreatening now. Bosses, class design, leveling, monsters, it’s all just… homogenized and lame. Like, more than it was back in the day.

And going back and playing older content is fun for a few days, sure, but it’s things I’ve already done, already seen, I don’t have a sense of progression or any of that. Same reason I can’t just go back and play older games despite me saying modern gaming sucks.

The time consuming things back in the day were brainless, like the CP grind and traveling everywhere for stuff or farming Black Lotus.

The time consuming stuff in Retail has you doing 10 affixes, 10,000 mechanics in one boss, you need 20 players, you need all buffs stacked, gotta have an actual good build, ilvl needs to be decent.

Retail is too punishing and anal retentive to be fun in my opinion.

I haven’t been in a guild since early legion. And yeah, still having fun.

If you want to try hard content, then look for a CE guild for TWW perhaps? Slaying a boss like broodkeeper during fated is hardly a challenge. We’ve had quite a few contenders for hardest bosses ever during the expansion, but all of them are way easier now than doing progression.

I am famously hard to get along with, to the point of having no friends or guilds in my entirety of playing WoW (and I started in Vanilla). No guild will take me, regardless of how good or bad I do.

So I can’t do mythic when it’s current.

But also, the mechanics don’t change, so I don’t see how it would be any different.

Waning tbh. I’ve found cyberpunk 2077 to be more fun then wow ATM.

I enjoy the remix and hope that they continue making “fun” modes like that (hopefully without the exploits / frogs in the future).

As for retail - no. The content is fun initially, but the community makes it horrible. Too many toxic zoomers and elitists. Guilds are dramafests that I don’t have the time nor energy to put up with anymore.

SoD has its appeal with new class specs / abilities, but… tedious without QoL. I haven’t played it since the first phase, but I’m assuming they haven’t added things like RDF. Sitting around a dungeon entrance spamming “LFG [dungeon]” for half an hour is a waste of time.

PvP in any version is a cesspool of toxicity and imbalance. I find that doing household chores is more fun.

Yup. Otherwise I wouldn’t be playing.

duh

When things are over, I like to ask myself if I just had fun or not and the answer is about 40% of the time yes, 60% no. In cata it is about 80% yes 20% no, but that’s because I spend more of my time in cata doing what I like doing (and love cata leveling and can just start a new character and level more). In retail that isn’t as easy to do because I have to level to do what I like doing in retail, and I hate retail leveling because of forced (terrible) level scaling.

I really do dislike the level scaling. I don’t know why they decided to do that.

It takes 5000 years to do anything in Retail, kill a mob, get crests, get flight stones, it’s blatantly slowed down.

Rather just go play something else now.
