Hunter is my favorite class because that’s what I played way back when I was a kid (I guess when the game first came out).
BM is my favorite spec because animals.
I came back to WoW a little over a year ago.
I was doing really well DPS-wise until SL. I recently switched to MM because I read that it is stronger than BM.
It might just be my ilvl and/or my conduits, but I still feel pretty weak as MM. I see BMs pass me on the DPS meter sometimes too.
I looked up the best talents and good rotations, but it’s not really doing much for me.
Is MM that much stronger than BM?
I just feel a little lost right now. Could use some advice
I know, I know. BM is the “easiest spec in the entire game”. I’m willing to stick w/MM if it’s a lot stronger though. However, I’d love to go back to BM if it’s not too bad. I’m only ilvl 174, maybe that’s why I’m doing so poorly?
Thanks in advance <3
(I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m complaining. I just don’t know what to do lol)
MM is leaps amd bounds better than bm, even surv is better than bm atm but I think the issue you are having is comfort ability. You are more comfortable with the bm rotation and timings than that of MM so you perform better. My main class is dk I can perform way better on a dk than I can on hunter just because I’m better with that class but not every fight needs a dk and sometimes hunter is better hence this alt.
BM is about 10% weaker than MM in single target. Maybe around 20% weaker in AoE. The difference is very noticeable.
BM is also particularly bad for the harder bosses in Castle Nathria. BM is terrible at 2-target cleave which makes it super weak for Stone Legion Generals. And BM pets can’t hit the adds on the platforms in phase 2 of Sire Denathrius, which makes it a ranged spec that has to do a melee role. So it’s a really bad spec for raiding this tier.
Regardless of what percentile I chose, hunters, specifically MM, are beaten by 8 classes.
When looking at specs specifically, MM is 11th, or 12th depending on which percentile you choose for the most part. 20th - 30th percentile it hits 10th, then for some reason, at the 10th percentile it drops to 13th. So… in short MM is not stronger than most specs, or even most classes.
Marks is middle of the road, BM is nearly dead last for both pve and pvp representation.
You probably give up 10 to 20% damage by playing BM vs marks.
Personally I’d rather do less damage playing a class and spec I enjoy. If your intent is to push competitive content though, then BM is definitely the wrong spec, and hunter might not even be the right class.
This is a spread cleave fight and logs on this fight aren’t included in rankings for a reason (any damage on this fight is padding anyway, the point is to heal Kael).
I mean why not just look at M+ logs? Those exist. And in M+, MM damage is in the top 5 along with fire, WW, Unholy and Balance.
MM does have higher potential than BM, however the gap is not as dramatic as most want to claim. The bigger issue is that BM is the lowest potential spec in game right now.
The issue beyond balance is the player base is terrible. They think because wow head says BM is the bottom the spec cannot be played and because MM is near the top its all that should be played. A nice true fact is 1% of MM hunters actual play it at the potential it can be played at, most play it at 60-70%. If you can play BM at the top 3% of its potential you will out DPS most players in game, you just have to work harder to do it.
Bottom line its a game, play what you like to play.
The average MM Hunter parses 50%. Not 60-70%. If the average MM Hunter parsed 60-70%, math would break and percentiles would cease to have any meaning.
BM is my favorite hunter spec but its complete garbage compared to MM currently. If you play BM hunter in a raid your asking to be carried which isnt cool
Nah, 20% is already overestimating it a bit. Look at the data and the sims, not at what people say about it.
A good BM player will do about 4.8k on single target, and a bit over 5.6k on AoE. MM doesn’t cleave for 8.4k by any stretch, realistically it will be somewhere around 6.3k. MM has a higher burst so it seems way stronger than it actually is if you only look at a 15 second trash pull.
Remember that most good players aren’t playing BM (there’s like 104k mythic MM parses compared to 5k mythic BM parses), so if you see a bad BM player doing crap dps you can’t compare that to a hardcore pro playing MM.
BM has had a lot of periods of being garbage. It was bottom of the charts during Legion. I remember it being bad during Lich King, and I’ve heard it was a useless spec in Vanilla (although I didn’t play Vanilla).
MM has a nice chunky burst and a very good conduit synergy. You can make mistakes in your rotation and not feel punished for making them.
BM is consistent and smooth after a short ramp up. Making a simple mistake in or around a frenzy refresh can cost you hundreds of DPS for upwards of 20 seconds.
The variations of damage can seem astronomical with the kind of burst MM can do but based on what I have seen with my guild members between BM and MM’s at similar gear levels around 210 in M+ we are seeing both do around the 4.5 mark give or take depending on the dungeon, the pulls, and if you die or not.
Realistically you should play which ever you are more confident playing. One thing to keep in mind is BM’s BIS legendary is really rough to play with and it makes up a sizable portion of your damage at all times. Rylak Stalkers is scaling incredibly well with both Haste and Crit but it is gonna be at least another patch before it can overtake Soulforge.
Depends entirely on the mistake and when it happens.
Make a mistake and overconsume Focus? Probably no big deal provided you have enough buffer on AiS charges to make up the difference before you overcap. Make a mistake and overbuild Focus? Again, no big deal as long as you don’t cap and have time to fire off a couple Arcane Shots before AiS overcaps.
Make a mistake on Kill Shot or Rapid Fire timing? You are never getting that damage back. Accidentally cast AiS before consuming Precise Shots? Congratulations on munching charges you can’t ever get back. Make a mistake and overspend Focus when AiS has 1 charge and 3 seconds left? You are delaying that AiS by at least 3 full seconds.
Pop Double Tap + Rapid Fire on an enemy that’s about to die because you didn’t check health first? You just wasted a 1 min CD.
Nevermind what happens to your burst if you accidentally pop TS or WS without the other.
