Is Mining and Blacksmithing worthwhile choices for a Profession?

Now before anyone insta-posts about how there are better professions. I’m not interested is getting the maximum amount of gold possible. In fact as long as I am making enough to cover my costs and maybe make a reasonable profit on the side I would be just fine with that. I’m just looking for a side project on a new Lightforged Draenei Paladin I made recently. And since they get their own personal forge I thought it would be cool to have professions to fit the ability.

Main Questions

  • Can Mining and Blacksmithing be a decent way to make a bit of gold on the side?

  • Is any of the gear you make actually usable while leveling or starting off at max level?

Mining is decent but BS (and any crafting profession, really)can be hit or miss. You’ve got to be willing to pay close attention to prices on the AH for both mats and items, and regardless you’ll have to sink a decent amount of gold (either from buying mats or just not selling what you farm) to level it before you can start making money.

For example, I’ve heard people saying they’re making money hand over fist selling legendary base items, and I’ve also heard people saying they’re not even breaking even after considering the cost of the mats used to make them.

Personally, I’d recommend doubling up on gathering professions if you want to make money without much effort.

I think there is more money to be made by selling the materials, i.e. ores/herbs/skins, than making and selling products made with professions.

Created top tier legendries takes a lot of materials.

So maybe Mining and Herbalism while leveling and then try Blacksmithing?

I went mining/skinning on my druid. Probably not going to do a profession on him but will have the skills to gather mats if chose a profession later.

I haven’t made an alchemist and don’t know the demand for herbs atm.
