Is It Time For A New Generation Console?

Howdy. I have a question about buying a new game console. I’m placing it in the GD forum because many of the World of Warcraft players also play console games.

So, I have a PS4 and a Xbox 360. these are over 10 years old I think. I also have a small but good library of games for both consoles which I’m happy with. But I also notice that some of the new console games are only being released exclusively for the new generation consoles such as the PS5.

I also notice that many new game titles are still being released for the last generation consoles. My question is this: Do you think it’s time to buy a new generation game console and spend a fair amount of money. With the possibility that some new AAA game is released for it that I might like? Or just continue to play on my last generation consoles and save my money until a time in the future when there will be only new generation games released. I guess my question is; has the game companies gotten to the point that they will only be releasing new titles only for the new generation consoles now?

PS: I Play World of Warcraft on my old PC and it plays just great on moderate settings. But Wow is one of the few games I can play on PC because many newer pc games I can’t play on my PC. Even Wow at times kinda stutters and lags etc. Besides Wow I usually play games mostly on my consoles because all I have to do is press play and the game just plays. With PC games I get on steam at times. Some games are playable only if I go to help guides for those games and fiddle around with settings etc. Some even recommend messing with bios and such things I dare not touch since I’m not computer tech savvy.

So I rely on Wow and my consoles for my fun gaming experiences. And yeah. I’m not financially well-off to plunk down $500.00 or more for either a new console or even more for a gaming PC. That’s my situation.

Microsoft is starting to invest in PC releases for their exclusives, and Playstation is starting to head in that direction too.

At this point I would never recommend anyone with a reasonable computer buy a console. I definitely never plan to. At most, get a Nintendo since they don’t seem to be following the trend.

Yeah, I won’t be buying another console. Maybe the Switch 2 when it comes out if it has backwards compatibility so the games that run like garbage on Switch will actually be playable.

But PC is definitely going to be the future. Supposedly the next MS console is going to be open source etc, so basically just a PC(and they’re basically just PCs with annoying software now).

There’s just no real reason to get consoles anymore. It made sense when 1st party games mattered, but anything worth playing on console will inevitably release on PC.

Yeah man. The 360 is 20 years old next year.

Modern console war has done so much damage to the gaming industry

Just upgrade your PC.

Consoles are just PCs anyways with less options.

Nope.

Get a PC.

Console gaming is dying. If you have the funds now to buy a PS5, then save it and wait another year to buy a decent gaming PC. By then RTX 50x will be released and RTX 40x will get bargain priced. You can get Motherboard+CPU bundles from Microcenter for a very good deal as well.

I only have a console for single player games like Ghost of Tsushima, Elden Ring, and Stellar Blade.

2 of which came to PC, with Stellar Blade also most likely coming to PC.

I also had bought consoles for the same reason. Just no reason to anymore. They release on PC with the DLC, look better, can be modded, etcetc.

PC always the best but I admit I really like the new xbox. I haven’t really been a serious console gamer since the sega genesis though so I’m not a good source.

So? I like playing games on console.

Console is kinda dying, because they keep pushing out new ones without much of a reason to buy them.

  • Nintendo- I own a Switch, and that’s pretty much it, because Nintendo exclusives are always, well, exclusive. And Nintendo still makes good games, so I’m sticking around.

  • Microsoft? Xbox is dead lol. They’ve admitted as much, and are pivoting to games instead- everything that ends up on their console is avaliable on PC eventually. They gambled on Starfield and Redfall saving the console, they failed.

  • Playstation? The console is fine, I just see little reason to buy the new ones over the old ones, because the old ones can still run the games. Also, same issue with games appearing on PC. Very little is exclusive, and I feel it’s just not worth the investment for only a few games.

One of my friends that purely played on console just recently swapped to PC, and won’t stop gushing on how much better it is than consoles, he’s been a console gamer most of his life. He’s playing Fallout: New Vegas now, and other games he’s missed out on.

Imo, each year, there’s just less of a reason to get a console.

PC is just the master machine. Everything ends up on PC, eventually.

And you don’t have to buy a new one every 4-5 years or so, so there’s that.

Imo, consoles are better for ‘diet’ gamers, PC for the harder gaming crowd.

PC is just less “pick up and play” and more “sit down for a while”.

Consoles are becoming dated, IMO. Consoles are nice to have for exclusives or a cheaper alternative to a PC, but at the end of the day, PCS are becoming powerful to the point where you can pretty much play anything you want.

I suggest you upgrade your pc slowly but surely as your budget permits. With steam and xbox live you can access the majority of the exclusives anyway. Consoles are a outdated concept anymore.

I think game consoles are going the way of the flip-phone to be honest

Seems it’s all about PC and mobile going forward

Yeah I tend to agree

Now that I think about it, I don’t even know too many normies that still plop themselves down on the couch and game using a physical controller… and normies are the main playerbase of Xbox/PlayStation/etc

Times they are a changin’ for sure

The only one really worth owning anymore is probably the switch or the switch 2 when it releases. Unless they eventually open that up to pc ports as well.

Oh no. I would at least get an Xbox s, and a game pass. The sheer amount of games they have is absurd. Don’t let the play station weirdos convert you tho! They have one exclusive that’s good. God of war.

I see the “get a PC, consoles are dead” crowd already chimed in. To give better advice, though, the glaring piece of information missing in OP’s thread is their budget.

But for starters; That Xbox 360, yeah, that thing is old enough to vote now. A series S would be a good replacement for that. Then store that 360 somewhere safe for those times you feel nostalgic for certain games that aren’t elsewhere available. I still have a PS2, a genesis, a Wii, and an N64 for that reason.

That PS4 is fine for now, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I still use an Xbox One S and a PS3 for certain games that aren’t on my PC.

For PC advice, best suggestion is find a local shop that you can communicate face to face with. When they know what your habits are and what you use the machine for, it can be amazing what they can suggest, and might even be able to work with you on getting it built for you. There are two in my local area that I talk to all the time.

So the questions to ask are;

What can you afford?

What do you do on these machines?

What do you want to do on these machines?

And besides money, what are you willing to invest along the lines of time, possible frustration and other such energies?

Why would I get a console when I have a PC?
