With all of the expected “speed running” of dungeons & raids which would require preknowledge of the raid or instance itself, where does that leave ppl that might have had an interest in tanking to learn how? The state of the game I would honestly say its only possible within a guild, where other players would be patient enough to let you learn properly. Im curious what are other ppls opinion
How thick is your skin?
Play with friends
Or just keep queuing heroics til you get a group that doesn’t have 1 hyper geared person and gradually figure it out, then move onto base mythics and LFR
Eventually do low mythics/normal and tada you learned
Also read a guide, you won’t get it right by yourself if it’s your first time
LFR can be a useful tool to learn tanking. Sure the mechanics won’t kill you in 1 hit, but you’ll learn what to avoid if you pay attention.
As for dungeons, learning to tank a speed run is going to teach you the same skills you will need in M+ so you might as well embrace your inner sonic and learn to tank on the fly. You can always learn the basics while questing.
Raid or m+?
Definitely doable but it’s definitely more stressful.
If you’re not in a guild you’ll want to research routes and boss guides if you want to avoid leavers.
If you do find a guild they’re generally more willing to suffer mistakes if it means they have a reliable future tank
I mean…I think yes. I just leveled my blood Dk from 35 to 70 and honestly, it was a breeze, and I basically never tank (healers represent!). Of course I have lots of WoW experience so I know how to tank and it was fine and fun, I imagine newer tanks will figure it out by level 70. And if they don’t…maybe tanking isn’t in the cards
you can do proving grounds
or just get into your tank spec and fly around dragon isles as normal and play the game. do some objectives and world quests. get some mass pulling on the go. get your rotation in check and defensives sorted.
once you are comfortable with the very basics jump into some normal or heroic or even mythic runs if you know the mechanics. but there are many guides for every dungeon and boss anyway.
Possible? Yes. Especially if you start from level 1.
Worth it? Not really. Not unless you have a group of friends or are willing to put of up with a lot of crap from willfully stupid dps.
If they’re not just a full zugzug DPS, they should know most of what they need to know already anyway. None of the tank specific stuff is hard, just sometimes annoying if you need to do homework on routes for serious m+.
Blood gets a lot of flack for being hard, but it’s genuinely cake. Make a blood dk. Keep up your bones, spam your red puddle, blood boil, and your heal attack and you are golden. For extra pizaz, grip someone from a different mob to the ones with the red puddle, and boom. Two full groups instantly agrod on you.
Yeah thats pretty much what it boils down to lol.
The most important thing in tanking is understanding how the monsters behave.
Something none of the guides ever talk about, which I always found strange.
If you have thick skin and can handle a few insults you’re good. In a way, I’ve sort of taught myself how to tank m+ im not great at it but have to screw up a couple of times to elanr
I don’t tank often at all, and I exclusively play on Blood DK when I do, but I learned how by reading guides and practicing in world content lol. Pulling a bunch of mobs on my own, world bosses, those group quests that recommend 5 people, etc.
Leveling dungeons are a terrible way to learn anything about the game. And it’s not even that people are dicks who want to go go go, but a lot of scaling issues mean mobs die too fast. Even on my DPS characters, there are some dungeons I go into and quickly realize I just won’t be playing my class how it should be played or I won’t be contributing to the group in any meaningful way. It just is what it is. I don’t want to go back to when leveling took 50 hours to reach max.
Everything is puggable. Just start at the easiest difficulties.
Oh yea, blood is very easy at lower content
Pretty sure fresh level cap blood DK could solo heroics without much effort
Only becomes sketchy at higher content, but absolutely safety mode for starting off
What’s funny is the way blood dk plays now, is how unholy tank felt when wrath was new.
Its tough as a warrior because they don’t have the self sustain like other tanks… They are tough but they cant solo tank like a druid/blood/DH/Pally. If not for that I would say jump into a Heroic dungeon solo and pull some mobs to test out using DCDs and get used to being smacked around pretty hard.
Honestly and very unfortunately the real trick is downloading and setting up all the proper addons and weak auras for the type of content you want to tank… Has nothing to do with the gameplay…thats the simple (fun) part. Then you get into the real Endgame…Tolerance.
The way i did it:
Start at +2, then go up.
Watch some videos of the particular tank class you want to try, paying attention to particular creature abilities and boss mechanics that only apply to the tank.
Start low (Heroic, or M0, or +2s whichever is your comfort zone); experience is the best teacher. Expect to make mistakes, but learn from them.
