Is it possible to get worse at WoW?

So I’m kind of having a wow-life crisis. Either I’m not as good as I think I was and have been getting carried, or I am genuinely getting worse at WoW.

I pushed keys in Legion and got a relatively high score as a dps.
Come BFA, I just feel like I’m a worse player for some reason. There’s just too much to keep track of in dungeons, so many little tricks to know. I find myself tunneling and staring at my weakauras, being generally unaware of what is happening in terms of the group etc. I don’t remember feeling like this in Legion M+.

There’s just so much to know to be good at this game, and the enjoyment of it for me is kind of gone.

If anyone has felt or currently feels like this, any kind of advice would be helpful. I’m just guessing it is burnout.

It’s possible, it’s usually an age thing but in your case maybe it’s just changes to the game or your class that don’t mesh well with you.

Well it happens no matter what I play. Its just my current mentality I guess

Sounds like me and FPS games, I used to be ridiculously good as a teenager and now i’m mediocre at best, my 10 year old brother can almost beat me quickscoping while I use an smg.

Revisiting an old pet battle dungeon after a long time and not being able to remember the strategies is about the closest I get to this feeling.

Feel like this bit is what a lot of people can potentially suffer from. Personally, when I have too many WAs, charts, Angry Assignments, or whatever else cluttering my screen I can get overwhelmed. DBM timers are about all I really care for for timers that I can quickly glance at, and I play mostly reactionary from there (but always noting what abilities are coming up).

That is the main thing I would recommend if you feel like you have gotten worse, try to limit the things taking your attention and go from there. IMO, having too many addons also severely cheapens the value of the game, even if minor.

The only time this has happened for me, would be when I was out of practice.

Legions classes and dungeons were better designed. Bfa messed both up.

Whew. I was expecting to see video of me playing my Rogue.

Just start utilizing something like warcraft logs and discussing on the forums, people there can disect your gear and play behavior and see where the problem is.

BFA dungeons, in my experience, require a ton more communication than legion did for me to feel comfortable. The biggest issue is that even groups of adds feel like mini boss fights with the ‘scripts’ you have to pay attention to. So it’s no longer just a burn through the dungeon to get to the boss and then know the 1 or 2 boss mechanics.

it’s, know the right path to take. Know when to stealth skip something. Know which adds NEED to be focused. Have your interrupts ready. Be able to dodge things that are tough to see coming etc etc etc etc

I did not push many keys in legion, but I did run keys. In BFA I’ve been pushing myself to go into harder content, but I NEVER would have done so if I didn’t have a few friends to talk me through it.

Is no one going to point out that BfA M+ dungeons are actually harder than legion? Affixes start at +2 and there are 4 now starting at +10 instead of 3. A lot of people wave the +10 affix away and say its easy, but it changes every season now so it wont become baseline. Add to that how they ramped up mechanics and amount of trash in some dungeons and it is very different from legion. Thats probably why gear cap hasnt gone up to 15 like it was in legion.

Anyway OP, it could be you have changed, but I would consider it is how M+ has changed first.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve definitely gotten worse at action games, and WoW has become much more action oriented over the last 3 expansions. Some things I have trouble with:

  1. I have difficulty seeing things when they are faint or similar color to the floor.

  2. I have difficulty moving precisely enough to dodge the things I can see due to age and shakier hands.

  3. My reflexes are slower which makes it even harder to dodge stuff.

The dungeons and raids this expansion are clearly not designed with people like me in mind. If you watch a Fatboss dungeon guide, count how many times they side “dodge”, “quickly” or “sidestep”. That’s what WoW gameplay is these days which makes it way less fun for me.

Honestly, I’m 28. And I’ve wondered this here and there, but then I perform fine. Some people have good days. Some people have bad days. Some people have days in the middle where apathy kicks in and you don’t realize it.

The other day, I was super frustrated because I was exhausted but tried to push a key with some buddies of mine and I got clipped by a mechanic which 1-shot me and I was irritated beyond words because I know better. It could be something as simple as being overly tired, or a lack of interest causing a slowing of the reflexes.

Idk, i’m 34 and i do just fine on my main when raiding and running mythics, i just play on weekends because my working schedule is a bit too demanding and it’s kind of obvious, your brain sucks up a lot of glucose and just wants to shut off after a certain point, you might want to push through but your brain starts giving up after a point, trust me i’m an MD so i now it feels when you’re completely burnt out.

When they mess with your class so much that it feels like you need to relearn the entire thing it can take the wind out of you and could cause a little disinterest. The disinterest could cause some apathy and you could feel like you’re bad or worse at it, when really if you jumped into it and tried to understand everything, you’d probably be fine.

I feel like this now trying to get back into Fire Mage from being frost for so long. That’s after YEARS of being only Fire and Arcane. Arcane bores the hell out of me and Fire is not appealing right now. Frost is still fun, I play it better. Definitely not a coincidence.

Sounds like it could be more personal then something with the game. Age, stress, meds, etc. will lead to broken concentrations.

I stoped doing serious raiding around the end of mists. I know im not as good as i used to be in part to the lack of the regular challenge of it. Use it or lose it kind of thing.

Ding, ding, ding. I think you might be on to something. Do things you enjoy doing, not things you think you should be doing. When you think you might be interested in other stuff go do it. Until then do something else.

There are things in game I used to do and had fun doing them. Now? I don’t care in the least for learning mechanics in dungeons and raid. Zero interest, nada. So I don’t do those things. Someday I will get back to it, just not now or the near future. Part of me wants to do mythic dungeons. Last expansion I didn’t get to it and it’s not looking go for this one either. Someday though.

I think of Mario Cart. You didn’t get anything from playing Mario Cart or most of those kind of games. But fun, they were just fun to play. So now I just stick to things I don’t mind doing.

I think you can. In Vanilla-WotLK, I lived in battlegrounds. I remember if I wasn’t in a BG, then I was dueling. I was certainly above average.

Then I hit a point where PvP was losing its appeal for me. I started focusing on RP and casual PvE. Then, I completely moved off of PvP servers. Now, I avoid PvP at all costs. The me of the past would probably whip the current me with little effort.

Could also be apathy.

I haven’t raided “seriously” since the rng loot fiasco (WF/TF/sockets/etc.). Why put in the effort for the mediocre version of an item.

Then there is the fact that you can get comparably geared for next to no effort. It may take “longer” (elapsed time), but it is almost as efficient (play time spent) - certainly considerably less difficult.

So am I a worse player? Absolutely. I stopped pushing keys ages ago. I stopped raiding ages ago. I stopped looking up BiS gear guides since its more theorycrafting than ever (rng azerite gear), rarely enchant since you trade in gear faster than ever.

The game is a mess. Classes suck, reward structures are all over the place, and it just leaves me with a “why bother” mentality.
