Is it possible to connect an External GPU to a desktop?

Long story short, both of my PCI Express x16 slots stopped working or something isn’t working while installing my new PSU (Corsair HX1200, because a $250 for a 1200w 80+Plat makes more sense then a 1000W 80+ Plat at the same price) give more power for my soon to be installed my RGB fans, and whatever i’ve seem to do atfer i’ve installed the new PSU (I’ve tried different GPU’s, different slots for GPU’s, different cables and monitors and even switched back to my old PSU) always resulted in no signal for my monitor. The Computer does work, i just can’t see anything. So trying to fix it from bios and or desktop isn’t possible because neither my motherboard nor CPU has integrated graphics (B550m Pro4 and AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT)

Edit: Had to fix what my CPU spec, because my brain went Toil-Lit. :toilet:

So it got me thinking, i need an external GPU to connect whenever that situation happens.

But first i may ask… is it possible to connect one to a windows desktop? I’ve seen that it can be connected to a Laptop or Mac, but is it possible to connect one to a windows desktop?

Btw, in case if you’re wondering, i’m on an alienware laptop that a friend of mine let me borrow until my problem is sorted out. :alien:

Also, i’m aware of the CMOS battery, but i don’t want to mess with that at the moment unless i know more about it.

Yes you can use an external GPU with a desktop, the problem is if you have no display right now your MB might not be able to use it as the default display which won’t really help you.

sounds like the motherboard is fried, and looking at the prices… a new motherboard is cheaper

Yeah, that’s what i was thinking about too. I even reset the CMOS battery, still nada.

Yeah, I would find out what MOBO you have and look for a replacement. You’ve probably toasted it and that’s your best route IMO.

ASrock B550m Pro 4 micro ATX.

The New one i’m getting is Gigabyte B550 AORUS ELITE ATX AM4 Motherboard.

The challenge is now, is i have to update the bios in order for the CPU i have to be supported. (once i get the motherboard)

just put the bios update on a usb stick

when new motherboard is installed, go into the bios and you can update from there. it’s UEFI so it should be able to update from inside the bios itself

edit:
also AMD is coming out with their new AM5 chipset/socket and CPU so if you’re looking to upgrade soon you might get a cheaper replacement
