Fooling around on my baby Rogue alt tonight just doing some casual bgs, I notice when I “open up” in a teamfight I frequently “overcap” my combo points. For context, I’m running Subterfuge talent.
Garrote gives 1 point, Cheap Shot 2 points, tab target to some other dude and Cheap Shot him too, tab target and Garrote a nearby Priest, etc etc. Very easily it seems like I rack up 7-8 combo points in a short amount of time.
I can’t help but feel like I’m “wasting resources” with so many combo points over-capping the 5 combo point limit.

In most situations, I’d say it’s not something you should feel bad about. Like, in that situation you provided, you are restricted to a set amount of GCDs. If you waste one using a finisher, you’d miss out on applying a CC. Likewise, there are some other situations that bring up that issue. Say you have 3 combo points and you use Mutilate. If both strikes crit, you just lose 2 combo points. It sucks. But, that’s just how it is. So, don’t feel too bad about it. I miss Anticipation.

Depends on your goals, if you are just having a good time and just toying around then it’s no biggie. If you’re trying to top the meters in pve then it’s holding you back. If you’re trying for high ranks in pvp then you’re also holding your self back. All matter of perspective.
It’s okay to over cap combo points when you’ve got the 5 buff with AR up
Everything stops making sense as far as a rotation goes at that point because you think you might be god
I’ve always played by the theory that wasting combo points is the worst thing you can do as a rogue.
I know in PvE you Envenom at 4 combo points for that very reason. Obviously you want 5 combo points but you may find yourself at 4 thinking “Okay so do I mutilate one more time orrr…?”…no, you don’t. That 1 extra combo point isn’t going to do enough damage to warrant wasting those combo points that would actually end up doing more damage when put towards your next Envenom.
PvP is different however. You never want to Envenom really if you’re not at 5 combo points because of System Shock.
In a PvP opener with the trait that causes Garrote to grant 3 combo points you may end up wasting a combo point or 2 in some specific cases, but outside of that no, you still never want to waste combo points.

In PVP you are often holding five or six combo points for a Kidney. So you are often over capping CPs. Which is okay!
No point in trying to do a DPS rotation when a Kidney that lands at the right time is far more beneficial.

Sometimes I will purposefully Mutilate for the 5th cp just before I use Vanish. This allows for a 5 cp Envenom that is buffed by Master Assassin.
My priority is:
refresh Garrote if needed > Toxic Blade if not on cool down > Mutilate.

Agreed. With PvP it’s all situational. You have to be thinking a few moves ahead.
