Is it just me, or does the WoW community seem to have become friendlier?

Hey yo,

So like, I took a long a** break from wow because of school (started my thesis this year <3) and now that the holidays have started for me, I decided to buy Shadowlands and restart my subscription to play with a couple friends of mine.

Ok so, duh…playing with my friends is obviously a friendly experience, but when he crashed from lack of sleep and told me to continue levelling and queue up for dungeons, I was honestly expecting the worst. You know, trolls/elitist players, etc…

Contrary to my expectations, every single dungeon run I’ve been in thus far (and I’ve queued for at least 10 runs, at least) has been filled with socially friendly players.

I don’t know what it is, truly.
Could it be that we have a greater influx of players this time because of COVID-19, suggesting that somewhere down the line, we lost a big portion of our friendly player base who are only returning now, because of Shadowlands, and because our current life circumstances are limiting the kinds of social interactions/activities we can do (and thus, WoW is becoming naturally more popular)?

I’ve always felt the “toxicity” of the WoW community was very overstated.

Ever since Classic came out I have noticed the percentage of A-holes has dropped tremendously.

I guess the existence of this thread supports your* point lol. Looking back at my history playing wow, I think something changed to make me be cautious with how I approach things in game.

I definitely didn’t wonder if I was going to get a friendly dungeon group or not back when I played during BC (and through Wotlk).

*Edit: changed you to your

My guess is because the player base is getting older.

In game, I’ve come across friendly people helping in Trade, answering questions, even while out just questing, I’ve had Horde toons step in and save my furry butt when all the mobs spawn at once.

It’s been nice, and I agree with Avoxenite, since Classic came out, the people left seem a lot nicer.

On the forums? Whoo boy, not so much.

Early in expansions, dungeon groups are always pretty friendly. A lot of people learn mechanics by actually doing them, not watching videos.

That being said, just turn off trade-chat and avoid the GD forums.

I’d like to think so! Most people have been nice.

I think people are having fun and enjoying the new expansion, I myself think its pretty good. Once that wears off though and people have their classes nerfed, burnt out of torghast a million times and things like pvpers get screwed again, everyone will become grouchy sadly.

New expansion times bring out the best of the community. Everyone, for the most part, is in a good mood so conversations are positive.

In pve… eh? People don’t really speak… ever. In pvp? Hell no, just as toxic as ever.

A lot of the toxic people have left WoW, I assume.

This hasn’t been my experience, but I’m glad yours has been good!

when WoTLK comes, there will be plenty of lvl 58 dwarf Death Knights.

When people enjoy the game, they tend to be happier.

When people enjoy life, they tend to be happier.

I try to force civility. I have bailed on more than one group as a tank if I enter and say something like " hi guys" and no one talks. I prefer a little kindness and will demonstrate it by just finding another group.
This game design has allowed these ingrate entitled people to just act without repercussions and expect things to be handed to them.
I think that with all these new things to learn and explore it has forced these kids to come out of their self-absorbed shell.
Also, main thing is al the elitist jerks with high ilvls in BFA are now on equal footing with us scrubs. Not so cocky now are ya? But give it a month, the “toxicity” will be back by those who pandered to higher end raid guilds to get the better loot. Then they will be back to strutting it around like they are someone special

This is another good possible reason, that I completely forgot to consider.

The vast majority of people I encounter in-game are friendly and actually helpful.

Which is always surprisingly pleasant no matter how many times it happens.

Beginning of expansions are usually more friendly than normal. Personally I’ve never found it to be unfriendly (overall) at any point… but it is definitely a bit nicer in the beginning of expansions.
