Is it just me, or are character names getting worse?

Shankinstab
Iwillattack
Letmediepls
Beastkillaz
Getagripbruh
Pewpewonyou
Shortymufuqa
Hittingyou
Pewfknpew
Fearmydotz

These are just some of the names of characters I’ve seen today (although referring to them as names is a stretch because they’re not names; they’re statements!)

Just ugh.

It really detracts somewhat from the enjoyment of the game seeing characters like that running around.

Getting worse? Those are all names I’ve seen since vanilla.

Mm, nope - pretty much always been just like that. Even on RP Realms, where it really really shouldn’t be.

Pretty much this. Just seeing them less on rp realms, but when I log on my old PvE realm? It’s all over.

If it annoys you, maybe a change of scenery is in order

Immersion has died down
in bc/wrath people actually “Were” their character
you had a name, a guild, a reputation, whatever
at the end of the day you built towards a progression
now its just like… go out there and do stuff.

my alts were all created to be profession mules so i never took their name seriously.

i also have:
broom
cuticle
pizza
spaceship
shipmypants

among others.

my alts are only there to feed my main for the most part so yea they get stupid names :stuck_out_tongue:

Not caring enough to put effort into naming. There’s part of the problem right there

The majority of my alts are there to feed my mains (both Alliance & Horde) but they still get at least half decent names.

Most of the good names are taken, so you either make up a really fantastical, weird-sounding name … or just say ‘hell with it’ and do that.

It’s not really their fault, there’s only so many good single-word names…

Unless you play on a RP server. Where your character immersion actually matters.

Excuses excuses.

I manage to get decent names for all my toons. Just have to put a little thought into it.

In all seriousness though, I can work around it too, it’s just incredibly irritating, and you never quite get the name you really want most cases. WoW has needed surnames for years.

This is a symptom of not having last names.

I wish Blizzard would add the last name convention and we could get rid of the strangling name situation that has existed in the game since launch. Doing the AB comp stomp brawl shows that last names are possible for characters…why they aren’t in game i have no idea.

As your own name shows there is more than one Kazar but i wonder how many people have had a problem with using the special characters in your name over time. Put in a last name convention whether it is a system like Swtor (something i wouldn’t mind seeing) or something simple so there can be more than 1 Kazar or Motors per server would help fix this problem and over time there would be a lot fewer Istabudie type of names out there.

Kinda seems like it’d be an effect from lack of immersion.

Not saying it’s happening but the less people are into something the less they’re going to care about how they interact with it.

With name and form comes consciousness…

That, or alternatively Blizzard could do what other MMORPGs have done and tie your character’s name to your account name but only display the character name.

That way you could have whatever name you wanted, regardless of whether someone else already has it. You wouldn’t need to use special characters either!

I started play around 12 years ago when there was a ton of character names that referenced lord of the rings so no names are not getting worse

Only for the reason that the lame edgy name the person wanted was already taken, perhaps.

There have been punny or edgy names since the stone ages though.

I get this is a joke thread, but I think naming could improve a lot if they allowed a single space in the name.

The last names I have used are Angwynn, Horborg, Rethel, Falstaff, Navvie, Xorsha, Castagir and Mjölnir. I will take care creating names because I’m going to be reading them for quite a while.

But you’re quite right, OP, there have been some pretty loopy player names in-game.

A good source for names I have found recently are character names from older Doctor Who episodes. Looking more at 2nd-4th Doctor episodes (1966-1980)

I don’t agree.

The bulk of my characters are named by the random name generator because I don’t really care.

But I seldom look or take any real notice of the names of other characters I come across either. It’s just not something I personally care about.
