There was some of it in WoD as well, but I’ve noticed the artists really seem to get into it when they can make techy stuff.
Not to say that the regular fantasy stuff is bad, but I really think you can see some extra passion when they get to cut loose with mechs, steampunk, or medieval sci-fi.
Its… an acquired taste. The theme isn’t bad but I wish every high tech race didn’t have the slapped to gether look for tech.
The burning legion came closest to escaping it.
Very much so. A lot of the Goblin/Gnome building, weapon and vehicle aesthetics are peak.

Not sure why the Earthen mechs seem to be canonically coal-powered. I do like the diamond one s1, though.
The Lightforged Warframe remains the high watermark for mechs. It was the first one to move away from the janky, sputtering lawn-mower animations of the Goblin Shredder model that ruined the Felsteel Annihilator mount.
The spate of non-flying models we got in undermine are fine. The Darkfuse Solution one is best in show there. Otherwise I’m not a fan of the cheap looking flat/matte paint jobs. I get what they’re going for but it’s not for me.
Now the Felcycles. Those have become the iconic mount of the expansion for me. Getting all of them has been fun, especially the Mountain Dew Hateforged Cycle for someone outside of the US.
That’s because the art team no longer has any metal heads working it.
Zereth Mortis showed that half of their arists would really rather be working on Sci-Fi.
Not good imo. Sci Fi elements work a little better as a garnish in Warcraft, not the main course.
I think it’s because with a Sci Fi they can go all out while fantasy you have fantasy limitations.
You really can see it. Their mechs and techs just have a different level of quality to them. I wish they’d get the green light to do their own Sci-Fi MMO, because I think they could actually probably kill it, but I just can’t see that happening.
Its alright i guess. A real metalhead would have done a better job.
That’s a fair point that I didn’t really consider.
I think we can all agree that the latest “void-scarred” line of mounts is perhaps their worst work.
Just a horse, lynx, wolf and wyvern with a spell effect constant on them. Its not even a recolor, just a spell effect. Unimpressive
All the artists are good in this game with 1 exception, whom ever keeps designing hunter armor
Heritage armor and appearances that aren’t armor or class locked are about all I use on my mail classes anymore. I don’t know what they’re aiming for with mail sets.
