Is it "Cringe" to

Well, the bottom line is that as long as it’s not breaking the ToU, you do you.

However.

It can be immersion breaking. I want to fit into the environment I’m in. I don’t want to bring others out of the setting, since I have that choice.

But… “cringe” is when you have so little flexibility when naming your character that you sub in alternate characters to get the name you want. I get it when it’s a transfer, and you are hoping to snag your original name when they release names, a time of transition is reasonable; but the inability to come up with another name when you are starting fresh and it’s a character from something you like: cringe.

That said, on a scale of 1-10 for offenses - I think that ranks a .00000001 :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it’s only slightly cringe if it’s a really cliche one. I know that’s not really “fair”, but it’s just how I feel lol.

But at the end of the day, if you want to name your character Sasuke with a bunch of special characters, you do you.

Gods, I hope not.

But, in my defense, I am named after a language, not an individual.

I have a couple of these. Who cares? Enjoy things, have fun, life is too short to worry about “cringe”.

My character shares the same name as the main character from my comic book series I published. But it’s been my username everywhere since 2003.

So… a little cringe, maybe?

I would never do something so cringe.

The anime character names are cringe to me, but do what you want don’t worry about it.

Fixed that!

I am beyond mad I missed that

It spelled like how most westerners say it phonically.

To be honest, when I see mispelled names of RL celebs or very famous video game characters, I roll my eyes at it.

It’s like, really, you could put some more effort into creativity even if you’re not into RP. I’ve seen so many CloudSephirothx’s and other junk like that, that it’s not so much cringe, it’s more like “you really couldn’t have come up with a better name than that?”.

You picked one that a large number of people probably never heard of.

I think the OP is talking more about mainstream stuff everybody knows, Legolas, Sephiroth, that kinda stuff.

Heck, I myself once named a character “Dhalin” not realizing that was one of the dwarves’ names in the Hobbit. A few people commented on it. I later race (and gender) changed my character, and thus also changed the name, not for that reason though.

It’s only cringe if you name your hunter legolas.

I have to go with “Yes”. My name is an original creation.

PS. Ironically… it has become “cringe” to use “cringe”.

Yeah, I use “eyeroll worthy” instead. Because that’s an accurate description of what I end up doing when I see stuff like all the xLegolasx’s running around in different games.

Especially FFXIV, because, you know, there’s even less of an excuse for it because you have surnames over there. And some of the combinations I’ve seen are truly … eh. Very much eyeroll worthy.

I mean, I’m not gonna pretend I don’t think it’s at least a bit weird when I see people naming themselves after anime characters. You do you though.

I only use alt codes on my Scandinavian names that actually need them. It’s a cool way of practically ensuring you’ll get a name that isn’t just ascii spam. I’ve moved away from doing that though because I realize what a pain it is to communicate with me as a result.

I say, name yourself whatever the heck you want. Puns, names from other media, it’s all fair game. Just so it isn’t against ToS and/or vulgar, in which case you’ll probably be looking at a free change.

I have a tendency to make joke names (my original DH was named Crackmaster, after the lost Sesame Street short of all things), but I most often get tired of them and change them long before anyone else even notices the joke.

The name on this character is a minor historical figure from southern france, a very pious heretic (by orthodox standards of course), it seemed fitting. The name is medieval southern french (technically called Occitanian) which means “The Light of the World,” which, again, seemed fitting.

The name I had before that was some kind of random generation with a few letters changed, I don’t miss that at all as there as zero emotional connection to it and probably kept me from reinvesting in the character for several expansions.

This is one of my oldest characters and probably my first paladin, he was a dwarf first but when I made a second dwarf I faction swapped and I’m glad I did, I’m not really alliance at all anymore so his sister languishes while this gets played.

Side note: Cringe was one of those words that I kind of liked until it got overused. Ie the first few times I saw it, I was okay with it. Now it’s like every other word out of the younger generation, if they cringe that much how do they enjoy life? Plus there’s this haughtiness to the phrase (like you’re somehow embarassed for the person for being some kind of dork more than generally appalled) that’s a bit, well, cringey.

I’ve got names from Elder Scrolls. Got my nightborne mage, Sothasil. I had a human pally named Stendarr, but changed servers and lost it. Oh and I’ve got a kul tiran warrior named Smough. Hell, I’ve got characters named after WoW characters. Got my troll shaman, Zekhan. And my blood elf death knight, Thaladred (get it? because he was killed in TBC).

Of course I’ve also got my human priest, Pardue. Named after Tom Hanks’ character in the smash hit Mazes and Monsters!

All my character names come from books in one form or another, although they’re not really popular/mainstream books and likely not well known.

If I saw someone using one of the names I’d use, I’d be tempted to ask the player if they were a fan.

Not really; this toon is named after Sailor Saturn :ringer_planet:
