I only use alt codes on my Scandinavian names that actually need them. It’s a cool way of practically ensuring you’ll get a name that isn’t just ascii spam. I’ve moved away from doing that though because I realize what a pain it is to communicate with me as a result.
I say, name yourself whatever the heck you want. Puns, names from other media, it’s all fair game. Just so it isn’t against ToS and/or vulgar, in which case you’ll probably be looking at a free change.
I have a tendency to make joke names (my original DH was named Crackmaster, after the lost Sesame Street short of all things), but I most often get tired of them and change them long before anyone else even notices the joke.
The name on this character is a minor historical figure from southern france, a very pious heretic (by orthodox standards of course), it seemed fitting. The name is medieval southern french (technically called Occitanian) which means “The Light of the World,” which, again, seemed fitting.
The name I had before that was some kind of random generation with a few letters changed, I don’t miss that at all as there as zero emotional connection to it and probably kept me from reinvesting in the character for several expansions.
This is one of my oldest characters and probably my first paladin, he was a dwarf first but when I made a second dwarf I faction swapped and I’m glad I did, I’m not really alliance at all anymore so his sister languishes while this gets played.
Side note: Cringe was one of those words that I kind of liked until it got overused. Ie the first few times I saw it, I was okay with it. Now it’s like every other word out of the younger generation, if they cringe that much how do they enjoy life? Plus there’s this haughtiness to the phrase (like you’re somehow embarassed for the person for being some kind of dork more than generally appalled) that’s a bit, well, cringey.
