Entirely subjective. To me, it’s like a “whatever they want to be called in game” thing, but there are some people who do it in a healthy way and people who don’t.
It’s one thing to name yourself after a popular character, and another to also dress your character exactly like them and basically larp as said person in game. I’ve seen a lot of that on WRA where someone is trying to basically make their RP character a WoW embodiment of Reaper from Overwatch while their character name alludes to it as well.
I’ve seen a lot of people dressed exactly like Saber from the Fate/Stay series in XIV while named things like “Saber Pendragon” or “Saber Artoria” but that’s about it. They don’t prattle on about winning the Holy Grail Wars or anything like that.
Basically, the difference lies between “reference” and “clear LARP”. The second you breach into LARP territory, you’re being cringey to most people. Best example of this back in very early WoW was a rogue named Ming who was considered the original rogue theorycrafter. Now, if you didn’t know this dude had an unhealthy obsession with Naruto you would after a couple of his blog posts. Nobody would care if he was a fan of Naruto, or anime in general. It was when he started calling himself “The Rogue Hokage”, going on about how “he was going to help rogues unlock new jutsus and reach their true potential” and how any innovative pvp trick he posted about he always called a jutsu.
In late Vanilla, the idea of a rogue cheap shotting at 90 degrees over sap to not break it with auto attacks, then expose armoring and restealthing. Ming on the other hand would somehow find a way to load a basic explanation with a bunch of Naruto references that in all honestly, would probably outclass the manga/anime’s writing if they were paid to “explain this but in Naruto.” That is cringe.
My name does come from other media, but I do feel like it is quite fitting for a goblin. If only I wasn’t terrible at PvP and could get the “General” title.
My Forsaken priest was previously named Nefarious. I think back then there was a doctor title. My memory is fuzzy. But I wanted to make a Dr Nefarious reference since I was a really big fan of the ps2 Ratchet and Clank games
uh…I think it’s fine, but I think It’s just over done sometimes, and It gets boring. If you role play as Thanos then It’s ok I guess, I’ve nerver seen that.
I don’t think so. Im using this name I have as a male draenei and female, I felt like maybe it was weird for a min but decided who cares. Lol the only cringe names I see are ones that have to do with female or male private parts or about “thick” something or whatever.
There was, for a brief period, a Doctor title for whoever earned “Realm First: Northrend First Aid,” but those profession titles were scrapped rather quickly and eventually scrubbed from the game.
Why they haven’t reused such a primo title is beyond me, it would be a swell reward for one of the archaeology “collection” achievements. (I may or may not be desperate for such a title for an alt who may or may not be named Robotnik)
