Is it common for your specialization be switched upon entering a dungeon?

I’m leveling up a NE Priest, basically in the discipline specialization, but when went go into a dungeon, I was suddenly a Shadow Priest. It was somewhat unnerving since I never developed any of the shadow talents.

Iirc in leveling dgs or max level heroics whatever role you queued for will be the one you are put into the dungeon as. So oddsare you queued as either heals or dps and it picked you as dps

Yes, same in BGs. I mistakenly queued for a BG as a druid healer/dps and one time it dropped me in as a Boomkin. My DPS spec was feral, so I was clueless and had the wrong gear on. You can’t chang spec or gear in BG, so that was quite a terrible BG for me. I unchecked DPS after that.

That is because you queued as dps, your talents change to match the role you selected.

I was given the choice at the before I could enter the queue and I only selected damage because I was unfamiliar with being a priest and didn’t want the responsibility of keeping people alive. I guess discipline is perceived to be a healing or maybe some kind of hybrid specialization even though even though it is listed as a damage.

Discipline is a healing spec.

I did not know that the group finder automatically switches your spec for you, however. Is this new?

Discipline is a healing specialization so yes, if you want to dps as priest itll be as shadow. Disc deals damage as part of its healing kit but its important to remember its a healer first and a damage dealer second. Think of it kinda like moira from overwatch if youve played her.

I can get the whole “oh my god, will I be able to keep people alive” thing, and feel that when I play non-DPS roles that have responsibilities. Good news! It doesn’t matter. Even if you suck terribly, you just drop the group and they’ll forget about it in 30 seconds. So seize the day and go for it.

If you’re terribly concerned, work your way up. Start with a normal…well, heroic. Just start with a heroic dungeon and take it from there and learn what you can handle.

If you’re worried you won’t be able to keep people alive? More good news! You can’t. HA. They’re going to die. But you’ll know when the problem is you, and most of the time it’s probably not going to be you. No matter what the tank not using defensives or the DPS who stood in the bad say.

I go through this process every expansion or when I finish an alt. Since I primarily DPS, it’s always a “shift” in mindset and a bit of a learning curve. But it’s not so bad once you hop in.

So hop on in, you’ve got this.

Note: Tanks deal with damage differently, and some specs are waaaay spikier than others. You’ll learn which are which with experience, but enjoy the incoming moments of panic as you do learn this.

Haha, that happened to me once and I was confused for a moment. I rarely do anything but DPS but my monk is brewmaster, so tank spec, but of course I queued as DPS. When my spec changed to dps I was confused and not prepared, so I just switched it back to brewmaster so I had all of my abilities ready to go. No one complained, thankfully and we did fine, was just a quick Bastion run.

Do this at your discretion.

Not an ideal thing to do, or not sure about now with the changes but you can
queue up as DPS, and change into Disc while in the dungeon. I was keeping up in DPS meters, kinda-off healing and just was a ‘second’ heal sorta. I would not recommend this past leveling dungeons though and maybe even then. Leveling dungeons are easy so you can get away with stuff like that but some people may be upset lol, so at your own risk really. It may help you learn Disc a little bit too if you off-heal.
