Is it a time waste

if i start leveling again in SOD given how little amount of people are playing?

Whats going to happen to these characters down the line?

I don’t consider it to be a time waste at all. For me SOD has been one of the funnest experiences of all wow iterations. This is especially true if you are interested in playing a spec that exists only in SOD. For example: Shaman tank, Warlock tank, Rogue tank, or Mage healer.

They have said the server will last for ever… but if only a hand full of people are playing it can they justify the cost to leave em up? Only time will tell.

I agree with Gunsinger… this version was hella fun and because of it. I can’t play era/anni its just not the same.

you will only find raids during certain hours if you’re expecting early/afternoon raids you’re probably not going to get any… maybe with the exception on one brave leader that feels like doing a hm2-3 naxx but other than that it’s always 7-9 pm ST where most of the raiding happens at least on WG.

Def worth having a toon and playing, you will be able to find weekly raids right now at least. I suspect SoD will have a comeback before years end, its too good in its current form not to tbh.

The cynic in me says that’s when they’ll make the “tough decision” to close the SoD servers.
…ya know, to force people to CMoP while offering some stupid deal like “buy a 12-month sub and get 4 WoW Classic Tokens FREE!”; all to get money.

Not true. Cost is almost zero

Server should do 2 things:

  1. Save existing characters data
  2. Process actions of players currently online

The cost of (2) is almost zero on dead server, for obvious reasons.
The cost of (1) is also not huge. Every character data (his current in-game coordiantes, gear, bags, completed quest data, …) is not more then 100 KB if it’s compressed correctly (in reality, i think, not more then 5-10 KB, but lets take 100 KB as upper limit). So, if we have 10 millions of characters on server (again, it’s upper limit,i dont think that sod servers have more then 10 millions ever-existed characters), it is not more then 1 TB of data (again, it’s with upper limit in both cases - in reality i dont think it’s more then 100 GB). 1 TB SSD cost not more then 100$. It will justify its cost in 1 month, even if only 10 players playing sod. And in 1 year, even if its only 1 player.

Corporations don’t run like us, with our Netflix sub still running even though we haven’t watched a show on it in over 4 months. Because “eh, it’s only $18”.

If they think it’ll lower costs. They cut it.

Not a waste at all, we are gettin a tight community,
You remember names in wpvp,
Names of ninjas or douces in raids,
People are helping each other out farming mats asking over trade instead of just buying off AH,
Im still having alot of fun in SOD, its just not 24/7 anymore.

they’ll go to a farming spot up north and live happily ever after.
