i want to get high fps in raids i have a i5 and it drops really low with a gtx 750 ti
A new i7 will still get fps dips in raids. That will happen regardless of your CPU and video card. What i5 do you have and how low are the dips?
i5 6000 series model
That’s still a good CPU. Your video card was entry-level for gaming is around 6-7 years old now. I’d upgrade that and you should notice a difference.
The specific model of the i5 6000 makes a difference. A 6600K will get you very different performance compared to a 6400T.
The obvious upgrade is the GTX 750 TI. However, that might not be possible if your power supply doesn’t allow more power.
IMO, it’ll be better to just buy a whole new machine. An i7 is not required for best performance. An R3 3600 will get you similar performance. A Radeon 5700 would be a giant upgrade over the 750 TI.
I have a 6700k in a custom built tower that runs WoW very well with previously a 980Ti and now a 5700 XT.
Agree with @Aribeth - it sounds like this is a prebuilt machine and its PSU may not afford you much margin for upgrades. A 3600 AMD build or i5 Intel build would handily outperform what you have, and if you don’t feel up to building it yourself there’s always services like CyberPowerPC that will build them for you for a nominal fee.
I run an i5 8600k overclocked at 5ghz. It’s not easily beatable, even by a 9900k, especially if I apply liquid metal and a liquid cooler. You will not get 144 fps in WoW no matter how good your hardware is, it simply isn’t possible. Even if theoretically you had a 5nm chip, it would not get 144 fps on ultra settings. I get 90 on a good day in Boralus.
My advise is exactly to get an i5 instead of an i7, because the cost efficiency is just that big of a difference, and you can overclock it to make up for the difference. WoW will(afaik) only use 6 cores. Even the venerable 7700k still out performs the 9900k in a few cases with half the core count. Just make sure you get the one with the “K” at the end, and be sure you get an aftermarket cooler, because it does not come with one.
We are approaching the end of the era of silicon, at least for gaming, and especially for CPU intensive gaming like WoW. May as well upgrade now.
By the way, my GPU is a 1070Ti and is not bottlenecked in any way, it tops out at 65% in live wow in boralus.
That’s not that cut and dry.
WoW’s CPU usage depends on what you’re doing and your CPU scheduler. On Windows, end game raids a 9700K will beat a 9900K in lows (HT hurts perf). When you ride a griffin the 9900K will be faster. A 3700X/3800x will be faster with SMT (AMD’s HT) enabled in raids the last I tested. There’s a lot of variability.
After 8 cores perf diminishing returns hit hard. Without an 8 core you won’t be able to easily keep min frames for freesync/gsync in TM on Windows 10 1903 at least. Without end game raids/TM a 8 core might not get much more than a 6 or even high clocked quad core depending on the content.
As far as your 6 core, it’s also at 5Ghz. WoW likes more cores and high clock til a certain point so you have the best of both worlds.
