Is grinding outdated?

Outside of leveling, I refuse to grind anything. That’s why I liked WoD: there was nothing to do, which meant I didn’t have to do anything. Guild Wars 2 spoiled me with its no-grind philosophy. Is grinding outdated?

I will never not stop grinding, unless asked to do so.

Rest assured that I will never ask that of you. :kissing_heart:

At least you aren’t in danger of anything falling off when you grind…

Sorry. I took it. Now, it’s all mine. I’ll use it in for my no-kill Gnome traps (need fresh genetics for my farms).

Yay! Sunday for All!

Guild Wars 2 has some insanely hefty grinds (hello Superior Sigils of Nullification for the new set, though that’s since been nerfed some thanks to the Sigil and Rune revamp). The difference is that it doesn’t have a treadmill, so once you complete a grind, it’ll stay there forever. You don’t throw away anything (with the exception of replacing an Ascended item with a Legendary).

Considering that FF14, ESO, and GW2 do not have the long grind philosophy and all have more players then WOW currently. I would have to say yes grinding is an outdated model for MMO’s. The model those games use is fun game play, fleshed out characters, which make the game fun to play, where you dont want to stop playing.

Uh… you definitely grind in FFXIV. There are things to grind in GW2 as well but it’s more optional.

I like grinding. What’s wrong with working towards a goal? It’s when there is too much RNG thrown in so you are never sure you will actually reach that goal that I have a problem with it.

Where did you get access to any kind of monthly active user stats for WoW, ESO, GW2, and FFXIV to make that comparison? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I don’t mind limited grinding myself. I refuse to do it in BfA though. The classes are just not as fun as they use to be. With out the interesting gameplay mindless grinding is just that.

I haven’t grinded for anything since Cataclysm. Still have most of the Allied Races unlocked and all the current reputations at exalted.

I don’t think grinding is a problem if it was mobile gaming would be dead in the water. There has to a good motivation, some sort of reward that appeal to the player. Otherwise what’s the point?

It also has to be fun to play a game(or a grind). If not you bore the player and a bored player is a player that probably isn’t going to stick around.

The only thing I ever grinded for was my bloodsail admirals hat back in 2005. It didnt feel like a grind because I actually enjoyed killing tens of thousands of goblins who interrupted my pvp.

Grinding is outdated in some games simply because they now sell all the cosmetics and junk you use to grind for. Now they can’t be bothered to put it in game. Or if they do the grind is skewed so bad you give up and buy it.

I don’t mind grinding as long as the reward is meaningful to me

I don’t grind gear in WOW because the goal posts are constantly being changed making the grind pointless (especially when I can just wait for catch up mechanics), but I don’t mind grinding titles / mounts / professions

FF14 sold 14 million copies of its last xpac, ESO sold 10 million copies of its last xpac. Gw2 sold 8 million copies of its last xpac. WOW BFA sold 3.5 million copies for its xpac. Does not take a rocket scientist to realize those games have more players due to games sold. WOW has not been the leader in the industry for about six years, but is sixth in the top twenty MMO’s.

Um, what? All three games have grinds, GW2 worse has it worse the all three. Do you have a source to back up how many players those games have?

Source lol just WIkI it, or look at any of the multiple MMORPG news sights.

The 3.5 million was as of day 1, and we don’t have total sales yet. On top of that, Path of Fire and Stormblood have been out for more than a year, so of course they’ll have more sold overall compared to an expansion that’s been out for 3 months. For comparison, Stormblood is estimated to have only sold around 80k in its first week.

So you’re comparing apples to pineapples.
