Wanted to level my DK to 60 like I always do. Try blood for a bit but it felt really boring and frost seems somewhat interesting in open world/ leveling since the have brust damage. With unholy it seems you have to line up all your CD and disease which I mean isn’t very practical when leveling.
But on fourm every is saying Frost is bad espeically 2h. DW seems better overall. Is that even true. My guild leader plays a frost DK and he seem to be doing ok in heroic raids.
Frost as a spec is okay it’s just… overshadowed by Unholy in all shapes or form. Except for pvp. It also depends on which covenants you choose… E.G. 2h Frost is not really good for Night Fae but may be better for Kyrian.
It just doesn’t deal the same amount of damage that Unholy does no matter what rotations you use in contents like M+ or Raiding.
Maybe this is a L2P issue but logs would say otherwise with little amount of parses that the spec has and is behind unholy and many people want something that makes Frost as a whole and competitive to Unholy.
At least Frost is better in PvP and 2H seem to be doing okay as well.
so should I try DW or 2h when leveling. I got the level 115 ilvl 2h sowrd during the pre patch LS event but only have ilvl 90ilvl one handed sworded if I go DW.
You may have to experiment between 2h and DW yourself and determine which feels better to play for you. Ask your GM about his stance with Frost for more information.
I would try unholy as 2h if I were you. But if you really want to play Frost exclusively, I would play 2H as Frost unless I’m Night Fae.
Lets really be honest, you probably wont like Frost until after level 60. The main rune spender is missing a significant portion of its damage until 58 and if you dont have the crit chance, and possibly a little bit of haste, its going to feel probably just as bad as any other dk spec.
The spec isnt bad, the leveling experience however is not great. DW is performing better overall for the most part and would perform better in leveling due to 2 runeforges. Since you are looking to level it to 60, then DW will serve you much better.
Even going past 60 DW is most likely going to serve you better as well. Venthyr is more for BoS builds so DW will be better for it. Kyrian with Shackle giving Mastery is good for everything within your burst window than just Obliterate so DW with its 2 runeforges will serve you much better. Night Fae just interacts with DW better most likely because Obliterate is 2 hits as DW instead of 1. Necrolords is really a middle ground.
But just in terms of just leveling, DW. You will have 15% more damage on most of your kit outside of Obliterate which isnt going to hit hard until level 58 when you get Killing Machine rank 2.
I have been playing DW for leveling and just recently got really into 2H. I like both types, both have pros and cons. With 2H my main issue is the loss of 15% frost damage increase. I am liking 2H more as I play around with it.
I hope some day Blizzard will get rid of glaciel advance and just make remorseless winter give procs of razorice.
Not at all what I meant. You are saying “fine” is a bad word in the context of frost, so what would you want frost to be. I thought that the example of overpowered gave enough context but I guess it didnt.
Fine is good, its not great, and its not overpowered. So what would you want it to be? Underwhelming also doesnt mean its not good, it just means it didnt meet expectations though it can still perform.
So what do you want it to be? There are people doing all difficulties of raids, M+ isnt even really worth looking at since the gearing from it has been nerfed to be less than heroic raids, and its extremely melee unfriendly with some of its new affixs and in pvp there are people performing well as well.
I get the impression that people want it to be overpowered just to be overpowered.
I make fun of fine because that is what the gatekeeper community consistently uses to describe frost. Even though it’s significantly behind UH. It’s also significantly underused on timed key runs and I personally have a hard time finding groups running frost. I want to see frost improved both in M+ and Raid. I don’t know why the FDK discord is ok with this, maybe it’s because it’s so rarely used it makes them stand out as big fish in a little pond.
However it was really eye opening and disappointing to see my guildmate jump on his UH DK last night that was 20 ilvl below mine and still do the same dps as me. One fight for example I ranked in the upper 90 percentile while he ranked in the upper 68, but we dealt the same damage. Like 1.25 million to 1.18 million. Of that 44% was from the UH pet. It’s like, wow here I’ve poured so much time and effort into making my character as good as it can be and I’m the same as a class that is shelved and brought out on rare occasions. Really discouraging.
I’d like it to be a strong alternative to unholy. I’d like frost to provide more utility and bring more mechanically. I’d like it to rise above mediocrity, especially 2H. Just because I like 2H frost and frost in general, doesn’t mean I’ll pick it when performance matters, I only use it for fun in low keys and for PVP. This is not the ideal place for any spec.
But, we’ve had this discussion before. Just want to reinforce that being fine with mediocrity means you have settled for a sub par spec. If you’re happy with that, great, but I’d like to enjoy the class fully and not feel pigeon holed into 1 spec for certain content.
The same could be said for unholy in arena, it goes both ways.
Because it is fine. 2H is not Frost; DW BoS is Frost. Occasionally you can swap BoS out for Obliteration if it’s a heavily single target fight but Frost is 100% built around DW and BoS.
DW Frost is middle of the pack, which is entirely fine. Frost isn’t designed like Fury, BM, or WW, where weapon type is irrelevant, so if you choose to play the subpar version then you should recognize that yes, you won’t be doing very well.
Won’t be happening until 10.0 at the earliest. Frost has 0 baseline AoE and cleave and it’s impossible to boost that without shifting more power away from FS/Oblit and into BoS/Gathering Storm.
Being middle of the pack isn’t the end of the world, especially when Frost was a top tier spec throughout Legion and BFA when Unholy was in an actual worse spot in 75% of Legion raids than where Frost is now.
M+ is highly melee unfriendly with the new affixes and melee being targeted with aoe caps heavily. Its gear is less than H Raid gear so really pushing anything in it is kind of pointless unless you just like to do it.
But overall, it is fine. You can level with it without an issue, you can do M+ even if its hard to get into, and you can do mythic raids. Its all been done so far.
