Ive been an engineer since classic. Never really thought about getting rid of it and doing something else. But now… with this expansion making gear relevant again I find myself wandering if there is a point? I’m thinking about switching to leatherworking but havent made up my mind and figured someone here could tell me what I need to hear one way or the other. Doing a classic pros v cons list for now to organize my thoughts.
CONS
Most of what i make, other players cant use, except for those that can already make it themselves.
The only profession that has role playing “fun” as in i can craft something with a high chance to fail and blow up in my face. It was almost interesting, but mostly annoying in classic and from then on. Now they have doubled down on the failure aspect. Not a single other profession has to deal with their cool stuff blowing up or failing, but with us, it is a given. It might have made some sense if the buffs/items were exceptionally strong, but most everything is mid at best.
It is expensive, looking at the material cost compared to LW is crazy. plus the time it takes to make any one item, i have to craft into a craft into a craft into a craft to make something high end.
There just isnt any utility in a profession that is supposed to be all about utility. I can battle rez the raid… with a robot that will explode and kill everyone again if they accept too soon (seriously a terrible “RP” idea, someone should be ashamed). Most of my stuff will fail (even with high knowledge and skill). Nothing I make will help any of my fellow raiders in an encounter except the scopes… engineering is one of the most popular professions for hunters, 1 class can use our main trade good, and we can all make it. We can make the zapthrottle soul inhaler, kinda cool, except it requires “ammo” made by another profession… for engineering it is a one and done item, no character will need more than 1 if any, since the reagent it sources isnt used in a lot. JCs benefit more from my creation than I do.
No one needs my stuff, ive never even had a crafting order show up that i didnt send to myself.
My final con, i have over 400 crafting knowledge invested in this profession and i will lose it all if i change professions.
Pros
Some of the gadgets are amusing
i can teleport all over the game
gnomish army knife still has a SLIM chance of rezzing a dead friend.
Some pets and mounts.
Have i missed anything making engineering relevant or irrelevant? I really dont want to drop it, but I also want to be viable and able to make some gold. I have a ton of alts and leatherworking lets me create gear for half of them. Engineering lets me make goggles than none of them can wear. Not even worth mentioning the bracers, least interesting gear that no one cares about.
Evokers need engineers to make their legendary
ANYMORE?
Pretty sure Eng has been the worst profession since, like, mid-Vanilla. It’s ALWAYS been garbage.
I place no real value in teleports. Please. It takes like 90s to get anywhere in this game.
Eng sucks. It’s always sucks. Blizz seems content to let it suck. “Oh here’s some cool stuff you can make! … but only Eng can use it.”

Engineering is crap and has been crap since like WoD and even in WoD it was only half decent.
Blizzard has abandoned Engineer hard core and outta all the prof its hands down the worst one to have.

IDK if you either did not play or you just did not know, but this is 100% false.
Engineers were GODS and in fact one of the best prof to have and in some cases THE BEST depending on your class all through Wrath.
Engineers could make BANK with making ammo, the salt shaker let you bring in boat loads of cash as well. Through BC Engineer bombs were amazing with frost bombs being insanely OP along with our tinkers giving us huge advantages, we also hade the mote extractor which was relevant though all of BC and Wrath which allowed engineers to be the best at farming motes of fire, water, and air and allowed us to make crazy amounts of gold.
In wrath Engineers also had the best prof items in the game through goggles AND synapse springs which was basically like having a third trinket for free.
So no, engineering used to be AMAZINGLY good.

I was also engineer since vanilla. I gave it up around BFA. I used to like it for it’s fun stuff, not necessarily useful. The portals to BC giving different buffs/debuffs, bombs, Gunpack/Gunshoes, the MC helmet, and so on.
Legion was the last time I actually kind of liked it, and even then it was losing it’s charm. Now it feels like the only good thing is the portals/wormholes, so if that’s not for you, I personally don’t feel like it’s the “fun” profession anymore, and it’s definitely not useful anymore.

THis its lost all its viability because blizzard restricts the only thign Engieers have that is useful. Bombs.
We used to get as many bombs as the fight would allow the CD to have, now its 1 bomb per fight and it shares a CD with potions IIRC, which is horrible.
Our tinkers are garbage, and in fact the only ones worth using are still tinkers from like…3 expations ago, rocket belt, and glider. All our other tinkers even the new ones in DF are dog water bad.
The flamethrower is actually a DPS loss, the rez is super short range, long cast, and can fail, every other tinker is not worth using. We got some weird shadowflame charge ability, but again, not worth it, when all they needed to do was give us a simple grenade tinket that just launches a bomb or something.
Our guns suck to craft and no one even bothers buying them. Our goggles are alright, though having a single stat now is kind of a weird choice but whatever here we are.
We lost the ghimmic of making mounts and even then because of account wide mounts you can hardly even ever sell a mount for more then material cost because no one wants to buy them because they bought them once and are good.
Our ammo sucks to make still, with the materals costing more then it sells for when made, unless you 3 star it which even then, its BARELY sells for more, im talking like…you make 2 more gold maybe if you sell a 3 star proc vs just selling the mats.
Current engineering is just bad, horribly horribly bad.

sounds like general consensus is that engineering hasnt been worth it in a decade. The fun stuff is gone, the stuff that would be useful no one else can use. I just wish i could get even a portion of my profession knowledge back to use on leatherworking. Months of grinding down the drain.
Engineering used to be the go to proff for PvPers. They should make bombs usable in dungeons.

They need to make an engineer summoning pad.
Locks have had a monopoly for summons for too long.
Also make mount equipment that lets us weaponize our mech mounts like Gmod in the open world and let’s us interact without dismounting.

The outdoor only bomb restriction this expansion really sucks.
But hey, wyrmholes.

Engineering is pretty bad but I have patterns no longer in game so… Blah.
The teleports are worth it for me, even if only temporarily. I used to main a mage and I wanted the most teleports I can get to attempt to mimic some of the convenience, so I chose engineering and dark iron dwarf for this new main.
I’m currently enjoying the WotLK wormhole for the argent tournament, and I used the winterspring one daily when I was grinding out the tiger rep.
I also like the helicopter mount, and I’m looking forward to (finally) getting a chopper mount. I’ve wanted that thing since first seeing it, and I’ve been playing since the beta… though, if I don’t have enough mats and if the mats are more expensive than built one on the AH, I may just finally breakdown and buy it.

if you have all the old recipes and stuff, i would not get rid of it. Plus the xpack isn’t over yet at any point next major content release a weapon you make or something can be bis and you’ll be in business. You can always make completely safe rockets, i love those things
As a maxed out tinker engineer with the reduced failure rate on my bracers*, I’ve not had my bres tinker fail so far. The Wyrmhole saves me a minute or two a day as well, I suppose, but its mostly about the tinker bres chance. The crafting is worthless, particularly since many players are putting their embellishments on their wrists now so they don’t even want the one piece of armor we can craft.
*helm is for tier, not goggles, sadly.
If they could lower the cooldown on the explosives it’d be a viable part of some dps rotations.
Did anyone mention the ultimate gnomish tool? Can use to non combat rez. I have it on my warrior in case the heal dies and no one else has res. I swear it’s happened before! I thiiiink only engineers can use it.
