Is "Elitism" getting out of hand in WoW?

fair. fair. id be willing to bet that 99% of the people GD calls elitist arent even in a position to consider themselves “elite”. hell, im not really and ive killed uunat. most of the people i have bumped into trying to be pricks are mid-prog or late CE mythic players who think just because they have a few kills.

tldr; they poison the communities attitude toward players who play the game at high end if that makes sense when in reality alotta us are nothing of the sort

This. A lot of people have problems accepting their own shortcomings.

Anger is a display of weakness.

I’d say it’s the type of person who has to have only the best, and if you don’t also have the best they won’t even consort with you at all except to belittle you in some shape or form. They look down on others who are not ‘up to snuff’, a standard they set themselves and try to impose on everyone else.

Actually, you have it backwards. The “welfare gear” was given out because people put ridiculously high standards up for their groups. People can’t catch up on gear if they are always declined in favor of someone higher IL than them. Why would I take a 390 IL player to my weekly +10, when I could just take a 415 IL player, instead?

This is true. On the flipside, someone saying you’re bad at a video game doesn’t mean you’re making the world a worse place, that no one will remember you when you die, that you’re worse than cancer. It’s not a great moral insult, and imo there’s no need for people to act like someone spat on their worth as a human being because they called them bad at world of warcraft.

Is elitism getting out of hand? Not in my opinion. In fact, I think players “against elitism” are far more outspoken and aggresive these days. So much so in fact, that they cry elitism when there isnt elitism.

Thats probably why it seems that “elitism” is on the rise.

There’s always a segment of every group that likes to establish a hierarchy and enforce it through intimidation, exclusion, threats etc.

I just find it funny to see it here. I’m not surprised.

A basic fact is we are all nerds as we play this video game. Trying to establish oneself to the top of this hierarchy which we even see it here on the forums. Congrats to them, they are King of the Nerds!

Thankfully we have raider io to filter the players who aren’t capable, regardless of their ilvl.

Nope, “elitism” Is just a catch all phrase For people you don’t like or jerks.
There is no more now then there was back in Vanilla Or pick your expansion…

And of people saying all it was much worse now then " Insert expansion here" Are looking through rose colored glasses Just like when old people reminisce about the old days like they did not suck… But they did…

Maybe some of the “heroic casuals” have jobs.

Yeah, and it’s not other peoples jobs to carry them.

I disagree. There is a certain demeanor that goes with a person who thinks they are “God’s gift” to humanity on a video game. I actually lost a friend over this game because instead of them running with me as friends do, now they’re charging for runs with real money not in-game gold but real money. Like who does that and why did we go from being friends in-game to just strictly being a business?

I find the same people who lack in-game social skills are the ones who are on psychiatric medication such as my friend who decided it was cool to charge me real money to do a stupid run.

I would argue that the crazy gear system we have now is due to complaints about “my character cant progress” (when they actually can) and players complaining about lack of motivation.

Never said it was. I’ve carried many people over the years. Carried trash tanks too especially rocking blues in a +10 key. Stuff happens and yes its frustrating but its the nature of the game.

You are not talking about elitism, You’re talking about someone being a jerk and your feelings getting hurt over a game

That goes hand in hand with the definition of elitism.

Definition of Elitism:

“the attitude or behavior of a person or group who regard themselves as belonging to an elite.”

A bad egotistical attitude is an element of elitism.

No. Elitists can be jerks but not all jerks are elitist.

True. I never said all people “elite” were jerks. I merely asked whether it was getting out of hand. I don’t see it as much as others.
