Anyone done this? Did it make a huge difference?
I’m level 19 and almost ready to start aoe grinding on my mage, going to carry grenades as an “oh poop” button. For an average experienced player, is aoe leveling going to be much faster to get to 60 than questing? I will do dungeons as well when I feel like it, especially SM aoe runs, but I already have a warrior and I’m tired of relying on others… I just want to speed level by myself until I’m ready to do a dungeon.
Is it worth it?
Depends on your server really.
If you can stake out some high mob density locations with little to no competition, yea absolutely grinding is faster.
That said, server population affects questing speed as well, so the point stands for both.
Not on a pvp server I presume
I doubt it will be worth trying. With mega servers there just aren’t enough mobs to go around. Either you’ll be fighting with 3 other mages with the same idea, a constant stream of regular quest levelers, or the opposing faction. i would just wait until you can get spell cleave groups going in dungeons.
depends on the hours you play
outside prime time hours you can have a little competition, every spot that i go i find someone aoeing
i dont think is necessary faster but it sure makes you farm more gold in the end
On a pve server during a time not many people are on? Absolutely, the moment it gets crowded with other mages or people needing mobs for questing, questing becomes faster.
I didnt aoe level at all because every spot was packed. Its marginally faster but infinitely more monotonous.
Mob grinding is almost faster than questing to begin with. You waste so much time by running around. Just sitting in one spot and going in a path killing mobs with no downtime is quicker over a long period of time.
You’d still want to grab the easy grind quests as you are going to be grinding mobs anyway.
Yea I’d be definitely chaining it with quests for the mobs at the location.
That’s so strange… anytime I crossed an aoe spot on my warrior other than hillsbrad there were never any people there… maybe 1 mage
Dungeons are by far the fastest way to level currently. AOE grinding was not viable when I leveled, and I doubt it will be in the foreseeable future. Quest mobs and AOE locations are perma camped by either (A) the opposing faction who will kill you on sight, or (B) your faction, who will steal your mobs and grief you.
With dungeons you can safely enjoy the game from your instance while leveling very quickly and making tons of gold. Everything else is simply subpar.
I’ve been AoE leveling, and on a PvP server. I got to 22 during the wpvp start, and it was pretty slow for the first few days. Since it has cooled down on my server, i’m able to grab levels pretty quickly now.
As a side note, I recommend waiting till you are 22 to really start, gives you enough skill points to get Improved Blizzard, which is pretty necessary for AoE grinding.
Just gotta be better at it than they are! I’ve out killed so many people out of AoE grinding spots.
I’ve pondered this myself. In the end, I went with a Frostbolt build. Mana efficient, reliable damage, and very safe (which is important due to how squishy mages are). Better on a PvP server, too.
If you spec in this order, you will have an easy time. Each level it gets easier and easier, but it does start out a little rough as you are lacking the ability to really slow and trap enemies.
Frost Warding - 2/2
Elemental Precision - 3/3
Improved Frost Nova - 2/2
Permafrost - 3/3
Improved Blizzard - 2/3
Coldsnap - 1/1
Piercing Ice - 3/3
Arctic Reach - 2/2
Frost Channeling - 3/3
Dungeon aoe grinding is the best way with a good grp once you reach like lvl 20 hands down.
I didn’t have much luck with it. When you can pull it off, it’s pretty great. But, like other people have mentioned, there’s always someone else there. Either questing or they had the same idea you did. I’ve been happier just questing/grouping.
Also, I’m sure it’s different on other servers but I don’t see very many people forming AoE instance groups anymore. I’m thinking this was mostly a ‘first wave’ thing. Just an observation though, no loss for me.
Isn’t imp blizzard supposed to be 2/3 so cone of cold can reset the slow?
If you can find a spot with exactly the right mob type(all melee no ranged, no charges etc…) with the right population density and no competition for mobs?
Honest question - isn’t levelling via mob grinding really boring? Or is it fun for you? Is your goal just to get to 60?
no, you need the slow from blizzard not from CoC…CoC is just to kill mobs that got close to you
i just logged out because a mage appears on swamp of sorrows to divide the murloc camp with me
yes it is, but i think is more time efficient and you dont have to constantly travel around the world and its easier to farm more money than only through quests. i grabbed my mount at level 40 and i constantly update my of the eagle gear on AH
