I’m new to the game and i’ve been doing pet battles, the pet I got for buying the game can’t seem to kill anything before dying itself.
It depends on what you fight against. Like Pokemon, battlepets have types and their attacks have types. You gotta use the right types to benefit your enemy’s weakness.
It’s actually a good thing the store bought pets arent the strongest, if you ask me.
I wouldnt say its a bad pet. I can see how it would be good in specific circumstances.
Probably matches up well against flying pets.
This is also how many pets are. Its very paper-rock-scissors. Some pets are general purpose, but many have certain conditions they shine under.
Starting out in battlepets is the hardest. Everything you have is level 1 and you often get higher level spawns. It helps to buy three starter pets instead of one and just run through them per low level spawn til they’re all level 4 or so.
If you see a pet with blue writing and a blue border, catch it if you can.
An easy way to get started with battle pets is to get some level 25 ones via the garrison. Each toon you have with a pet battle building in your garrison allows for a quest that gives you a stone that levels a pet up to level 25 and makes it rare.
Of course, you need a garrison for that, and if you don’t have it, I’m not sure doing a garrison solely for that would be useful.
Another alternative is to see if there are any high level pets on the AH for a reasonable price. Most will be more expensive at level 25 than at level 1, but sometimes you can get some that don’t cost both arms and both legs.
Finally, try to get an Iron Starlet, which is a good general purpose pet (except against elementals). You can level that up first and then use it to level other types.
There are some good pet battling guides that include sections on how to get started, and also recommendations on pets that are often very useful, so you can focus on getting some of those first.

Do you have a link describing what you are talking about. I’m very interested and the pet system had always confused me. I look myself too, but it sounds as if you are in the know.
You can’t use pets at a higher level than the highest level pet you possess. Purchasing a level 25 pet is just going to take up inventory space, til you hit 25 on your first pet.
You may want to try to level it a bit and see if that helps. Get a few attacks in and swap pets before it dies, so it can gain XP when you win the overall battle.
Pet battle community is adorable.
Warcraft pets. Great website has all of the non combat pets and tips and guides for leveling them. It was made by someone from the Scarlet Crusade server, which I was suprised to find out about. Only gnome I respect actually… and the only one that is exempt from the cook pot.
Thanks. Most guides I’ve tried presume I know a lot more about pet battles than I do.
