Is Algarian Stormrider mount useless?

It has a unique ability called Lightning Rush (replaces the Whirling Surge boost) that can only be used when you build up 10 stacks of Static Charge. You build up stacks by flying near vertical (more or less) surfaces. In theory you could almost have a permanent Whirling Surge boost but it takes FOREEEEVER to build up and/or maintain 10 stacks.

Even in Zaralek Cavern it’s hard to build 10 stacks without dramatically going out of your way to fly near vertical surfaces. It’s a tedious mount to fly. I’m wondering if it will be more useful and easier to build stacks in the new War Within zones.

It needs to be looked at. IMO, it’s useless. I’d rather have surge forward.

Well, it’s not completely useless. The yellow version with silver armor looks fab with my paladin’s mog.

Probably.

Isn’t every mount in TWW getting a version of Lightning Rush or did I make that up?

edit: Dynamic flight. Every dynamic flight mount. I know that should be understood but I also know where I am, you silly forum people.

It’s not useless, it’s great for long travel. You can build up the stacks pretty fast, I haven’t actually timed how fast it is but it feels faster than my normal dragon. The one downside is that the damned thing glows and I hate it when they make stuff glow in general.

While it does take some doing to build up the stacks, it just somehow feels better than Whirling Surge. Aside from that, I’ve no idea if it faster or not. It’s good to at least have an option to use a different mount if one would rather have access to Whirling Surge.

Unfortunately you need to complete some Dragonriding races tuned with the Algarian Stormrider special ability in mind so you can get lightning effects on the expansion pre-order transmog set. So it’s quite likely they will keep it as is.

In TWW you’ll be able to choose between Lightning Rush or Whirling Surge for every mount. So the mount will be better then

You’re supposed to be able to choose between Whirling Surge and Lightning Rush in TWW.

As for the mount today, I rarely use Whirling Surge anyway so I don’t miss it.

I got this mount and then put it in my random favorites, since I summon a randomly favorited mount.

I didn’t think about it at the time, but I absolutely got screwed during the flying phases in Tindral in S3 one day. I took it off after that attempt.

It’s not “useless”, but it’s very niche and I’ve had more success being efficient with flight pathing that going out of the way to get stacks for that.

It’s really really good for long trips. Cuts the time to cross the O plains down dramatically.

I’d trade it for whirling siege in a heartbeat

I doubt it’ll be any more useful in TWW unless we’re flying around in super narrow caverns and caves.

I don’t know what to say. People don’t like flying low I guess, but I do. I love flying close to the ground and building up charges is no big deal.

the Algarian Stormrider mount’s new ability Lightning Rush is not a good idea when trying to fly between the platforms during the Tindral Sageswift raid boss fight. There are also MANY wide open areas in the game where you can’t fly near a wall or mountain to charge it. i think it would be a good idea to have it as a toggle between this ability and Whirling Surge.

Doubtful, I kind of wish they would replace it with whirling surge, I like the mount but because of how it works I just never use it. Heck you can’t even use it on Tindral because it’s slower than other mounts due to how it works. Not to mention once you even use rush it’s incredibly hard to control, I get they wanted to spice things up, but when all things are considered it’s just worse than normal dragon riding mounts.

They’re making the lighting rush ability interchangeable with surge forward in next expac. It’ll basically be a talent choice node.

I hope so.

That mount is very cool looking but that ability is kind of useless.

Well, all but one of the new TWW zones is underground, so you have to imagine you will be flying near more vertical surfaces. Without knowing the exact layouts, it’s tough to say whether it will make the lightning rush easy to use, or force you to build up stacks around the perimeter of the zones
