Is a physical wow item a collectable?

So a friend bought a Alliance mug for me to drink tea out of and took it out of the box.

Then my father said that to leave it in the box it'll be worth money some day. People pay big bucks for that stuff.

I just went with it.

But I'm thinking no it won't. It's just a common wow mug with the Alliance stamp.

And tbh I don't get collectables. You buy them, you leave them in the box, not touching and enjoying them, leave them for years until they are worth something. What's the point then?

Chances are that a random mug won't be a collector's item. Other items might be like the statues and action figures. If you want to use your mug, then use it.

Yes and no, it depends on the item itself, how rare it is, what people would be willing to pay for it.

A plain coffee mug that has a basic print on it isn't going to go up in value much.

That is what I was thinking

It's just a black cup, blue inside, black wow logo, and yellow alliance stamp.

Nothing special to make it worth something

You will never know what will be valuable in the future but you can make some pretty educated guesses.

If it's just a mass-produced mug that was stamped out with 1,000s of others: yeah that's not going to be worth anything most likely.

Yeah it's just the black and blue mug with the yellow alliance logo they had. They probably made a lot

I would just use it. It sounds like a nice gift, but its fairly ordinary and doesn’t seem like it would be a collector’s item.

collections vary.

given how many can be bought/made atm it isnt likel they will increase in value for a few decades at least.

My sis gets so mad at me about that kind of stuff. I don't buy wow stuff or those funko things to leave them in boxes. I open everything! Enjoy your cool mug.

Cover both bases. Use it, and buy a second. You can see if the market goes up, or use it if you break the first.

Yeah to me it just seems like a waste of money when you could be actually enjoying it and using it

my father once told me how he use to tape baseball cards to his bicycle wheel so it would make noise against the spokes.......baseball cards became a big collectible
and they were considered worthless trash back in my father's day

If you become famous, the mug will be worth something because you used it.

And now they are back to worthless. Baseball cards do not sell for that much anymore. You have to have the big cards to get the big values, and those are VERY rare

It isn't going to be worth anything, mugs like that are easy to replicate. The only items really worth much for WoW are the TCG items used in the game and some of the blizcon from the early years.

I mean, it'd have to be like years, most likely decades, after Blizzard stops development on WoW and selling WoW merchandise. And even then, it's a mug, which would go for significantly less money than a limited edition item or figures.
I say, enjoy it.

Which do you need more? A coffee cup or a maybe-someday investment?

My opinion - it's a cup. Drink out of it.
