Is a level 3 Garrison worth the 5000 gold?

Returning player here. My “first alt”, a level 40 mage, has only about 7000 gold, and she has to decide whether to blow 5000 of that gold on leveling her garrison up to level 3. She’s a mage, so I’m not sure she’d benefit much from the travel benefits of a higher garrison. She’s an herbalist/alchemist, but I don’t know if leveling the garrison up would help her make money. Is it worth it? I do think the garrison is kinda fun, but I’m not sure it’s 5000 gold worth of fun. (The garrison resources I can easily afford.)

I’m also curious whether this level 40 character should now move on to Legion and postpone the garrison indefinitely.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Off hand I’d have to say no because it’s all abandoned when Legion starts.

At this stage its a relic, so no .Some thing probably you would invest in once you reach max level and have a lot of gold to spare.

It’s something that you might want to do on one character just to get achievements. That’s it. You’ll never get that money back since you don’t get any gold from the missions. Trying to remember if there is something you can get from the table that might be worth something, like a rep token perhaps?

E: Ah yes, Medallion of the Legion. Not sure what that is worth. Probably need to grind quite a bit to even get that mission and then actually have the troops required to deal with it.

Thanks for the replies. I think my main did do the level 3 Garrison; I haven’t even checked, as he’s doing Legion. So if Achievements are still account-wide, I don’t need my alt to level the garrison just for Achievements.

As you say, maybe I’ll come back to it when this alt has money to spare.

For now, then, best to move on to Legion?

It depends if you are someone who wants to stop and collect all of the mounts/pets, complete all of the WoD questlines, access the shipyard which then opens up the questing in Tanaan Jungle, etc., etc. If you’re planning to stay in WoD content and explore it to its fullest for a long time (possibly months), then upgrading the garrison to Level 3 is pretty much required. If you’re planning to move on to Shadowlands or other newer content ASAP, it’s probably not worth the gold.

(On a side note, I build a level 3 garrison on all of my alts, but it’s because I really enjoy WoD’s content and replay it often.)

I think your best bet is to postpone the garrison. The 5k will be nothing to you when you get to level 60. It might be worth spending it then, to get the mounts and pets and achievements.

It looks neat, get a fancy castle for Alliance rank 3.

Horde rank 3 they double the pointed stick budget.

Thanks for your replies. I’m inclined to postpone but maybe return to it when I’m richer, as @Hippeaux suggests. @Maldonix, I also enjoy the WoD content, but I’m sorta curious about the new stuff in the game too. I suppose I can use Chromie to return to these quests later? I don’t fully understand Chromie, but she sounds like she sorta de-levels you temporarily?

Anyway, you guys are great! I really appreciate the help. It’s all overwhelming for someone who hasn’t played for five years.

You leave my pointy sticks alone!

The garrison can still be profitable, but it takes a lot of setup to get there.
Goblin Gliders are one of the more common things you can make and sell with the right buildings.
Trading Post is another key thing.
Rank 3 also gives you a free battle pet stone for an instant level 25 pet.

I use my garrison as a home base. So I wanted level 3 with the AH, guild bank, transmog, etc.
for me it was worth it, but then I am using it. The AH alone is worth it to me. I can hearth back and have my own private AH, then having Druid Engineer with all the wormholes, pretty much go wherever I want in game from there.

ugh…Chromietime. What a horrific joke thats turned out to be. You have to lock experience @ level 49 if you want to be able to keep using CT which means no SL’s content.
its absurd and not a lot of it is like they made it sound originally.

For the price, it’s not much and well worth it just as a place to go back to. It’s basically 3-4 emissaries worth of gold (maybe a week). You will never miss it.

Like was said above, the AH is good, so is the bank. You can do tailoring and make your own bags (depending server can be nice).

All in all I just like the garrison (alliance side).

5000g may be a lot to your level 40 mage, it’s peanuts to a Level 60 main.

You’ll earn that back in 3 Callings selling trash.

So, the question isn’t the 5000, it’s whether you just want to see it through and play around with it.

I had fun with the garrison back in the day, I think I made 4 of them to Level 3.

The shipyard, I personally wouldn’t expand in to, or at least as little as necessary. They didn’t add much value (though they do offer another hearthstone I think, but I haven’t used mine in years).

The auction house does sound nice. My mage can get to Stormwind etc easily, but it’s still a bit of a nuisance to get to the AH from the port-in point. I know one of my characters does have a guild-bank robot, but regular bank access would be nice too.

I would say for right now get a few 60s and farm some gold from dailies but once you come back get several alts a lvl 3 garrison if you want to make some real easy gold. You will need to drop some gold and time into it but you can pop out bags with little to no effort along with other things it’s a great hands free money maker if your limited on time certain weeks. Here is the guide to profiting.

She does an excellent job of explaining as well as which is option and a full cost set up and how much you can profit roughly.

This character is an herbalist/alchemist, not a tailor; my main is a miner/engineer. I often wish I’d made this mage a tailor! Anyway, I’ll need a tailor to make the hexweave bags, yes? I do have a tailor alt somewhere…

That’s really not how Chromie works. Chromie Time allows one to level up in old expansion content up to the point where one dings Level 50 (no further) and have the mobs and rewards scale to your character level. In no way does Chromie Time delevel you to prior content.

That being said, if you go back and do WoD content on a Level 50 or 60, you should be able to solo its dungeons and even raids easily instead of having to join groups to get whatever quest items, achievements, transmog items, etc. you need from them.

There are many guides for WoD content online (particularly on wowhead) that will tell you how to farm the pets/mounts and which buildings to build to access certain things (I build a L3 Inn for the quests and recruitable followers) if you decide to go back and do it all at max level. The gold costs involved are much more manageable then, since gold is easier to make at higher levels.

Ah, thanks for the clarification on Chromie. And yeah, I’m looking at that WoWhead guide on the garrison now. Very helpful.

Thanks again for all the help in this thread! I’m really glad I asked.

Sadly Garrisons stopped being useful to me when they “hotfixed” the herb gardens and garrison mines to no longer give out big chunks of XP right before SL launch (iirc).

Now it’s just an AH bot place for my non-engineer alts.

Level 3 Garrisons can sort of work as an extra hearthstone if you need it, that’s if you don’t mind going through Ashran to get to Org/SW.

Just be careful, as soon as you hit 50, you’ll be force kicked out of Chromie time.
