OK, listen… blizz, I appriecate the effort here, but I really can’t stand Undermine. It would be like if your made an entire content patch in gnomeregan… it’s just… too much. the whole zone feels like a mess. Not fun.
to those who enjoy it… I’m happy for you. I’m glad someone is enjoying it.
Now… my question. Is the zone itself optional. outside of the raid, and the delves. do I have to do anything in that zone at all?

you can skip the zone but you’ll lose on some power.

No you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. In fact, if you really hate it, just unsub and stop playing. But it’s just raid and delves there.

It takes like an hour to bang out the campaign there. There’s not really anything necessary to do there unless you want something from the renown vendor. Otherwise you may just need to head there to go to an instance entrance. But the weekly coffer keys and caches can still just be done in the other zones.

Of course it’s optional. For example my level 80’s are all currently farming mythic sanctum of domination and mythic castle nathria right now for transmog.

Everything is optional sir, this is a videogame. If you’re not having fun then don’t play.

Is 11.1 “optional”?

You’ll likely need the campaign done to participate in 11.1.5. But other than that ~2 hour chore, no.

The only thing that can potentially be required is the main story questline similar to how you needed to complete the original 70-80 leveling questline to unlock Undermine to begin with. So, this is a more “possibly…” then a “you will” since Blizzard is a bit confusing on what they do require being completed at least once over what can be skipped. Even more so on what can be auto-completed.
Like, you can just auto-complete the leveling campaign and Lingering Shadows if you completed it before, but the post 80 and the Fate of the Kiren Tor you have to play through to completion on each character. Not that it takes long if you skip and fly around quickly since you’ve seen and read it before, but its a bit odd and inconsistant on what Blizz allows players to just auto-complete and what needs to be done each time if you want to remove it from the journal.
But to fully answer your question, likely right now? Probably not. I don’t know if Blizz has locked accessing the Raid behind story progression or not, but if not, then at least for now then no. Future content within the War Within? Maybe. Wish I could give a better answer on that but can’t.

Mostly the erotic goblin RP near the apartments cannot be missed.

Its likely why there is a growing sense of apathy and why wow has issues retaining players, aside from the very rough first M+ season in wow and Bellular pointed out what it was in a sense, Pattern recognition and the samey feel of the game.
Rare’s, treasures, and world quests.
No challenges, no puzzles, nothing engaging not really just easy repetitive stuff with little substance
We just did Rare’s, treasures and world quests in Siren Isle.
We just did Rare’s, treasures and world quests in Kazal’gar
We just did Rare’s, treasures and world quests in the Emerald Dream
We just did Rare’s, treasures and world quests in Zaralk Caverns.
back and back same thing since legion…
Except now it really feels that’s all the entire world of Warcraft is now… There’s not really any challenging content outside of M+ which is starting to be frustration S1 and Raids. PvP mostly hasn’t changed.
Really the games become trapped on repeat.

I’m in a similar boat as you op. I’m sorry to my goblin friends, but I just don’t enjoy content centered around goblins. It’s too industrialized for my taste, I need extra magic and wizards and dragons (yes I’m a basic bish). But I can also appreciate how so many people I play with are LOVING Undermine. So I’ve decided I’m gonna do the bare minimum down there for my character to stay up to date, and then just spend time messing around on alts and finding other small projects to make progress on. I’ve been around this game for nearly two decades, I can live with one patch that I’m not a huge fan of.

WoW is a game, not a job. Everything is optional.
I don’t like rep/renown grinding, so I don’t.

Is 12.0 optional? Should I just come back for 13.3 to find out what happens maybe?

You’ll have to do the main questline if you want to do content in whatever other new zones Blizz adds in later TWW patches. Other than that, it depends on if there’s any rewards that you want badly enough to do content in undermine to get them (the answer to that could very well be no).
