Is 10.2.6 a... "world revamp"? Sort of

Today’s announcement got me thinking… Is 10.2.6 a “world revamp”?

For those unaware, 10.2.6 will be a surprise patch coming in March. No one knows what it contains, and there will be no PTR. Here some of what was said:

For the 10.2.6 patch for Dragonflight, we created what we think is a unique event inspired by past musings from the community. We can say that it is open to anyone with a WoW subscription if they want to participate (Classic or Dragonflight players). That’s all we’re going say. Sorry, not sorry? Our goal is to continue to keep it secret— and keep it safe. The speculation is great! We watched the reaction to the surprises in Season of Discovery and thought we’d try a similar, but different, approach for Dragonflight.

Here’s the interesting things:

  • It’s “inspired by past musings from the community”
  • Anyone with a subscription can participate (i.e. it doesn’t actually require Dragonflight, despite being part of it)
  • They compared it to Season of Discovery.

So, connecting some dots:

  • If it only requires a subscription, this event is not set in the Dragon Isles, where players with no Dragonflight can’t go until TWW is released.
  • What’s Season of Discovery? It’s a new take on old content. And this is “similar, but different”.
  • It’s based on comunity musings, and revamping the old world has been discussed by the comunity for years by now. It has been talked about at least since the end of Legion.

So… could this be a sort of old world revamp?

Mind you, I’m not saying they will completely revamp the old world. There’s no way Blizzard could pull out such massive effort for a minor patch. But they could do a revamp of sorts, like:

  • Updating sky boxes
  • Replacing certain old assets for new ones (HD versions of certain racial buildings have been datamined for years by now)
  • Picking selected parts of certain zones to populate with new content.
  • Replacing old mobs with ones with newer models where it fits (also something they’ve been doing for years now)
  • Using World Quest system to set up events in the old world
  • Update old NPC visuals with newer gear/customization that is already available in the files

Of course, this is not the real world revamp players have wanted for years, but it could still provide an interesting experience of exploring old zones for new content, much like Season of Discovery does.

Imagine, for instance:

  • You go to Alterac, and there’s now a fortress of rogue humans threatening its neighbors, with mobs and quests all around the north and easte limits of Fenris Lake.
  • You visit Hinterlands and the area of Seradane now has mobs and quests.
  • In Western Plaguelands, Caer Darrow (where Scholomance is) and its vicinities have been updated.
  • The entire Scarlet Enclave in Eastern Plaguelands now have things to do.
  • Newly reconquered Gilneas now has all sorts of activities in its lands (like in Blackwald or the headlands)
  • Dustwallow March gets some area revamps and quests surrounding the ruins of Theramore
  • Gadgetzan gets expanded to look more like its Hearthstone version.
  • And so on and so on. SO many possibilities!

This sounds very possible to me. What do you think?

Edit: Let me add more thoughts to avoid confusion. I don’t think this would be a real revamp. It’s not a new leveling experience, not even new quest storylines. Just something to explore the world and find some places revamped, with some activities to do there, like hunting rares, enabling world quests, grinding mobs, doing events and other stuff like that.

Don’t get your hopes up for a world revamp or something big like that.

Dream big but temper expectations

The point is not that it’s a massive world revamp, just a revamp of some areas that are mostly unused today, as well as replacing some old assets (like sky boxes) with new ones to make the world feel more modern.

Definitely not.

Very curious what this means… “open to anyone” … “classic or dragonflight players”, the only way classic/dragonflight players can interact right now is through bnet chat… what gameplay mode could be coming that opens up to both players?

Or is this intentionally misleading and really its only open to retail players and classic players can download retail if they want to engage with whatever is coming?

That would be so far out of scope for a minor patch IDK how you arrived at this.

Please, read the original post. I used quotation marks for a reason.

Most likely it is open to everyone. Blizzard probably has the numbers that might suggest that a vast majority of people who play classic do not have dragonflight.

That’s still at least a full major patch level project, if not an expansion level project.

It means anyone with a subscription can do it. So, if you only play Classic, you can make a character in retail and jump right into it, no need to buy Dragonflight. It’s also probably level-agnostic, as in it scales to whatever level your character is.

The fact that you don’t need Dragonflight or a leveled character really points to it involving the old world to some extent.

I have an odd “Charlie Brown” feeling about this. I’m not sure why, but it’s there.

I don’t know what that means.

I think that some people set their expectations a little bit too high.

I wonder if it is timewalking with literally every raid/dungeon dropping the badges (with everything tuned brute-forceable or only requiring minimal adherence to mechcanics (like normal modes).

There’s been datamined revamped versions of old assets (like buildings) that went unused for years by now. If it’s a mini-revamp, it’s not something they started pulling together after finishing 10.2.5.

Lucy and the football kinda thing?

Watch it be a Warcraft rumble pirates expansion. Mizzen is going to show up wearing a pirate hat and resume filling everyone’s mailboxes.
