Implementation of IPv6, RTX and Resample Quality (just AMD FX right now) are beyond HORRIBLE!
It is 2022, almost 2023, and IPv6 implementation on WoW games are super poor; Quake 2 Engine handles it way better (On WoW, lots of disconnects; I’ve tested it on more than 5 different ISPs, 3 different routers, on 2 different COUNTRIES); easier to keep stealing valid IPv4 IPs from african countries, than try to implement IPv6, right?
RTX implementation is ridiculous! One of the worst around! And adds mostly nothing to the game (unless youre looking for reflections on water surface); FPS goes from 150 to some 80-90 when RTX is on, for basically, no improvement!
Fidelity FX is super poorly implemented, and the LACK of NVidia DLSS/DLAA is ridiculous!
READ, before 4): I KNOW Blizzard does not offically support WoW on Linux, but, it aint a big to at least, make it run stable/without random crashes!!!
4) Linux support is crappy! Battle.net client runs only when it wants to (tested both BETA and Stable, and with and without hardware acceleration!!!). Lots of random crashes when playin, specially the Lich King pre patch (i know you give a damn for linux support, but I CARE).
What are you doing? Quit developing stuff for mobiles, and fix these things!!!
And PLEASE, keep giving beta test keys only for streamers, and your products will still be lacking quality/performance!!! Good job!
BTW, i run both on Linux AND Windows! and only the 4) applies to only Linux! All the other things happen on BOTH Windows and Linux!
My hardware is a Ryzen 3950x; ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero mobo; G Skill 3200 MHz, CAS 15, 32GB of RAM (4x8GB); Asus TUF Nvidia RTX 3080; 2 nvme; 4 SSDs. 3440x1440 resolution, 144Hz Monitor; FPS capped at 138 FPS, inside the WoW client!
Linux may be the way forward. Valve is pumping out Steam Decks and filling orders by the 10ks now and they are working on a gen 2. These things are selling out 6 months ahead. The Linux gamer install base is going to increase by 10s of millions over the next few years. Not sure how you could come to this conclusion.
The engine isn’t 20 years old either, Blizzard has completely replaced the renderer about every 5 years. WoW has one of the more modern graphics engines for MMOs currently. I would say only Black Desert and Elder Scrolls are slightly more advanced. Asset quality and renderer features are not directly related.
I find the soft attenuated shadows that RTX gives noticeable, but would like to see it doing more (mainly, handling lighting). On my machine (5950X, 3080Ti FTW3) the performance impact isn’t too bad, with framerates staying north of 144hz most of the time…
Don’t really have an opinion on FidelityFX or DLSS/DLAA but I don’t use those, probably because I’m driving bog standard 2560x1440 instead of a fancypants ultrawide.
Better Linux support would be great but realistically I’m chained to Windows for gaming as long as support for VR stuff under Linux is bad.
A good raytracing implementation can elevate simple/old graphics to a stunning extent, and WoW would be no exception. Google up some screenshots of Quake II RTX and Minecraft RTX to see what I’m talking about.
There is a monstrous pile of things to go through OP. WoW is a Windows game. If you can get it to run on Linux great, you’ll be one of the 3 people playing it on that OS.
Ray Tracing drops your FPS in every game. And no it doesn’t go from 150 to 80. Mine goes from like 140 to 128. Or 115. They don’t even have full RTX support, Blizzard stated that. And furthermore, RTX is stupid.
DLSS is only helpful in SOME games. If it helped WoW I’m sure they would have included it. It probably does next to nothing.
Also why are you exclaiming every sentence. You seem absolutely WIRED in this post lol. I think the game runs very well honestly. Your CPU is what is holding you back if you’re seeing low FPS with ray tracing on. Even my 5ghz OCd 8700k blows that away, and I am CPU bottlenecked too.
Go to Ardenweald, near the Heart of Forest, if youre playin WoW retail with RTX on and max distance drawing of objects…
…or Nagrand, near Halaa, if youre playin the WotLK, pre-patch, and enjoy the framerates…
About Linux operating under the “fix it yourself” principle, i can do that, most of the time… We have mostly open source codes, and a good system loggin for most of native linux stuff… I dont wanna get banned for debuggin nor to disassemble code; not i wanna get arrested for stealing source codes!
About IPv6; cmon, it is 2023, almost! The less NAT, the better!
PS: besides black magic and human sacrifice, i tried almost everything possible to try to make it run as smooth as possible, using the resources (IPv6; RTX…) they say they support on both platforms (Windows (officially supported & Linux (community support)).
PPS: i used to play wow on linux since 2004-2005, and ive never had as much problems as im having with the WotLK pre-patch (most related with the battle.net client and random crashes during gameplay)…
