"Invalid target"

Lvl 20 hunter, attempting to target enemies my pet is engaged with. About 30% of the time, it’ll tell me “invalid target” despite it being a hostile target, actively attacking me or my pet. Auto shot works. Sometimes if I move and attack again, it’ll “fix” itself, only to do it on the next mob.

What’s going on here? No addons currently installed.

Do you happen to use any mouseover macros for any abilities? For example, I used to use a mouseover macro for kill shot, and if my mouse was hovering over a corpse or a full health enemy, it wouldn’t go off even if I my current target was eligible. I know you probably don’t have that particular ability yet, but it made me think to ask to look into any macros as a possible cause.

No mouse over macros. Would the in game mouse over thing do it? I don’t remember turning that on, and it seems to only be that character.

Hmm I haven’t yet experimented with that, so I’m not sure. I don’t think it would cause a problem if you’ve never enabled it. I would double check the interface combat settings just to see if anything looks odd, or if any of the mouseover features are enabled. Maybe also toggling them on and off if not?

If the above doesn’t help, I tried to look around a bit to see if I could find any other information and I saw a few people mentioned in other threads it seems to happen when they’ve been ALT tabbing out of the game and the ALT gets “stuck” which means it’s attempting to self cast. I wonder if this is the case, or if changing the self cast modifier would help.

You could always try a temp UI reset to ensure nothing is corrupted and to rule that out by renaming the folders and putting them back if it’s not resolved. I’m not sure if that would correct an issue like this or not, but it’s worth looking at all the baseline fixes.

I’ll try it but it’s a two day old install.

I was encountering this issue myself and figured out I had this setting turned on.
