Invading My User Folder?

Anyone notice that a new folder at the root of your user folders has recently appeared… “Blizzard.” AMY subfolders, all looking like they are throwing in cache files. Uh, what’s going on here?

I don’t have a Blizzard folder there. What’s in it?

yep. looks like battle.net caches

Now I have dscovered they are sticking another more anonymous folder on my HD’s root, something called “Telemetry.” Almost nothing in there, so hard to tell WHY. There are MORE THAN one place they stick cache file, yeah I know they do need to do that, but why not within the little realms they have claimed… not happy there are all sports of blizzard files dropped in so many places.

I used to think pretty highly of their tech guys, but given the amount of bugs in the game, and now this kind of inattentive nonsense, I am not happy at all.

in users/username/appdata there have always been a couple blizzard folders. i have one under local and one under roaming. most everything on your computer will throw some random cache data and stuff in the appdata folder. what’s the problem with this exactly?

Brightbrown, are you referring to /Users or /Users/YourAccountName/ as the location? I’m not showing any Blizzard folder(s) in the home (~) directory. What are the file creation/modification dates for that folder and/or its contents?

The only Blizzard folder on my Mac is under /Users/Shared and its just caches for Battlenet.

Thought it was clear when I said my user’s root, yes it’s /Users// . It’s a very typically looking cache folder, Blizzard/BattleNet/Cache/1d, etc. Looks just like the one that can be found in Users/Shared/Blizzard. Dated 3/2/2018 (I RARELY ever really visit this location, I may have seen it in the last year and just ignored it). The one I found at my user’s root did NOT contain a “com.blizzard.World of Warcraft.prefs” file that was in the Shared folder’s hierarchy. So it kinda looks like it isn’t exactly some rogue copy of that folder!

It’s just weird, it may never show up again!

Whjat actually spurred me posting was the appearance in my HD root of 3 suspect folders, Telemetry, blob_storage, and GPUCaches. Telemetry seems to be another Blizzard dropping, the other 2 seem to come from M$ Azure and Adobe’s Maya, neither of which I have ever had anything to do with, AND MalwareBytes says I am clean…

I can definitely tell you blob_storage isn’t from Azure and GPUCaches isn’t from Maya. I have both folders and neither program on my system. Telemetry is definitely Blizzard though. I have nothing in my /Users folder at its root level, just /Users/Shared with the usual Blizzard stuff.

I’ll have to keep an eye out to see what creates the blob_storage and GPUCaches folders. It used to be Quartz Debug that created GPUCaches back in the PPC days. Need to check to see what is doing it now though.

Edit: GPUCaches appears to be Adobe. The other, you aren’t using a hackintosh like I am are you?

Now THAT is interesting… that speculation came from a thread on the fruit’s own forum:

discussions .apple .com/ thread / 250282982 (remove spaces for link)

The last post is mine fyi. If deleted, they instantly appear on a user log-in.

Yeah, I saw that thread. I know BDAqua - he’s been doing Mac TS there for nearly 20 years). He gave me the an MDD G4 about 17 years ago, and when it arrived with a non-functional CPU (it was somehow burned, possibly due to the heatsink shifting during shipment and I didn’t know to check that back then before starting the computer), he ordered a brand spanking new Sonnet dual 1.25 GHz G4 CPU. The good one that had L3 cache, not the 7448 that had no L3.

I know Maya can create those folders, but if it’s happening on user login without using Maya, it’s something else creating them. They take virtually zero space so I wouldn’t really worry much about them. I nuked mine just now and I bet when I restart they’ll be there, but in my case I’m on a hackintosh, which obviously uses an HFS driver.

It won’t hurt to leave them there. It’s mostly an OCD thing that makes me hate them.

Ah, cool. Yeah, I know full well to just make them invisible so I don’t have to be reminded… and I doubt anything really bad comes from them, BUT it is a mystery and MY OCD wants to KNOW WTF!

“Invading” lol calm down.
