Thalyssra and Jaina say they both have no idea what magic Sylvanas used, which means it rules out the void completely. It looks very much like void magic, however it does have a bright white center to it.
Is this a new type of magic in WoW? A mixture between light and shadow?
It’s probably some sort of death magic. It did kill somebody, after all.
But we’ve been through that with the Scourge, and Jaina says she doesn’t know what it is.
To be fair, we can kill somebody with every and any type of Magic, even Holy Magic.
Touché.
It’s unlikely to be Void related since that doesn’t mesh well with death, which Sylvanas pretty clearly embodies.
Indeed, I purge people in Holy Fire all the time, and Smite others to death. No need for any of that icky Void magic.
Have they never seen her lacing arrows with it?
The Scourge once served the Legion and Ner’zhul’s Echo inside Frostmourne uses Void Magic.
The Scourge used Void not Death. Sylvanas finally introduced true Death Magic given to her by Death itself.
Light, Fel, Arcane, Ghosts, Souls, Nightmare and Void can all create Undead just as well as Death Magic.
As for what Gorak Tul used: That was Soul Magic. Bwomsamdi used Ghost Magic. Jaina and Genn witnessed Ghost and Soul Magic but not Death Magic.
The Player’s encounter with Death Magic first started in Nazmir(used by G’huun’s Liches) and Zuldazar(used by the Cursed Child of Rezan and the Dark Chronicler) yet no one but the Player witnessed it. It was only in the encounter with Sylvanas that Death Magic was exposed to the Alliance and Horde as a whole.
plus Jaina would know void magic. Void Elves and all.
Seems like typical banshee/necromantic magic to me.
If only this lead to the necromancer class, with one spec being raising the dead, and one aspiring to become a lich, which is also raising the dead, but more focused on casting.
I still think it’s void magic regardless of what Jaina or Thalyssra said.
Jaina and Thalyssra are well read mages but I don’t think they really conducted thorough research on it because they were preoccupied with more pressing matters.
Jaina lost theramore and had a vendetta against the horde while Thalyssra dealt with the legion and the aftermath of that.
For the most part, the old gods have been suppressed beneath the planets they ruled since killing them would only grant a temporary death until they resurrect and sail the cosmos again, looking for a suitable host.
Imprisoning them was done by the titans to prevent them from going anywhere and since they were not dead, they could not resurrect and return which is why N’Zoth needed Azshara to free him so he could rebuild the empire he once had before he was defeated.
What about Lor’themar who has Rommath’s counsel? He raised the question to them.
I don’t even think they’re as knowledgeable about it. If anyone would know about old gods it would be people who are involved with the titans like Magni, Wrathion, or any of the other leaders of the dragonflights.

Azshara used Void Magic during the Raid Fight and N’Zoth used Void Magic to rescue Azshara. Jaina should be able to recognize the same magic if it was used on Saurfang.
Sylvanas states that she plans to have N’Zoth serve Death:
My bargain with Azshara will yet bear fruit. The armies of Azeroth will fight her master, and he will line their streets with corpses. In the end, he too will serve Death.
Sylvanas uses Death Magic. The Death Magic she used on Saurfang is identical to the Death Magic used by Kel’vax Deathwalker and the Dark Chronicler.
Death Magic is bright purple though not in the brilliant happy way Arcane is!
Of course the fact that Lorthemar and Jaina do not recognize it means that the Scourge never used Death Magic(instead opting for Ghost Magic, Void Magic, Fel Magic, Frost Magic, Plague Magic and Blood Magic to emulate what the Death Knights used) and neither were exposed to 2nd War Death Knights.
The deadliest spells belong to the plot armorite school of magic.
I think they were more referring to how she was able to channel such a blast.
Sylvannus was always a ranger/dark ranger, she never really showed any penchant for being schooled in any of the magics, other than what death talents she learned as a banshee.
Yeah I don’t think people knew she was such a good wizard, clearly shes gotten way more powerful and will kill us all for the next xpac.
What she meant is that she would maneuver him into killing more people, thus serving death by being a part time executioner which is why she mentions the corpses.
N’Zoth isn’t going to actually serve her as a minion.
As far as the colors, you have a point because they look similar but since all we can do is speculate, I still think it isn’t death magic.
