I’m gonna wait until morning to get into it too much but I read this before getting ready for bed, and as of now I’ll just say this was disheartening to read. Aside from the possible codex feature, that actually sounds awesome. But the way they talk about the story is troubling. In my own opinion. You form your own. Whatcha think?
Sargeras didn’t use the Sargerite Keystone because… they forgot why, but there was a good plausible reason!
…I mean, at least they’re honest about it. That’s refreshing.
Honestly, for once I’m not really seeing anything to be too bothered about. They forgot lore, -that’s- nothing new. Eyeroll-worthy at best, but otherwise… it’s a decidedly careful interview with very meh results, asides from the suggestion of an ingame lore codex, which could be interesting.
Wow, they’re adding lore features. There’s a general interest in lore expressed there.
Why, though? They’ve doubled down pretty hard on not caring about lore to the point of periodically not knowing what it is. At all.
I’d suspect it’s going to be a more half-hearted attempt to shut us up, if nothing else. They occasionally do little things to make the lore people happy and feel like they care - like they did with MoP and the lorewalker stuff, and the little tidbits of lore in the dungeon journal.
Sadly this was also my first thought. But then I was all “Nah, Azhaar, you’re just being a curmudgeon again, nobody but you is that cynical.” So, thanks for reminding me what Blizzard is actually like.
Why did I re-sub to this game… Oh, right, I get to make slow consistent progress unlike everything in real life which is a horrible crapshoot that rewards neither competence nor effort, plus WoW is grindy and colorful and good for vegging out while watching Brooklyn 99 which is what I’m doing this week (it’s super good, you should see it if you haven’t).
I haven’t played since I got the last three Far-Cry games downloaded tbh, then I have Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 to play through, all of these on pc.
Tbh, I’m only subbed at this point to use the forums and in-case they ever decide to make b-net need a subscription instead of the game xD
I love the whole “answers your question with a question” stuff
What you can say about Sargeras? In the previous expansion, he has been jailed within Throne of Pantheon. Do you have plans to bring him back or some other ideas or he is dead for good?
AA: What do you think about it?
I think that he will come back in the future at some point.
AA: What would you say?
PD: I agree with what you said before about death being a state. I think also imprisonment as a state where he is right now. If the story takes us in a way where he comes back then I’d love to see where that goes in.
AA: In certain skies across Azeroth you can see a constellation now after the Legion is defeated and there is a red star-- make sure you keep looking at that red star. If it’s ever gone-- that’s a problem.
I don’t think it’s a shock that Sargeras could bust out if they ever need a theme down the road.
The codex is cool, another thing to collect (good time sink for them).
This is all of note from the interview:
When asked about releasing more Chronicles or similar books, Alex said he’s not sure.
They like the idea of implementing an in-game codex or bestiary of sorts.
When asked whether Xal’atath was an Old God, Alex replies that she lies a lot and you never know what’s the truth. He said her story will be explained further.
The red constellation shows the current state of Sargeras’ prison. If it disappears, there’s a problem.
The Old Gods we’ve defeated thus far (Yogg-Saron and C’Thun) are considered dead, but Alex makes a point of note that they may bring them back if they want to.
Hmmmm… Is that red star still up in the sky? I remember looking for it once while I was in Kul Tiras and was confused to see that I couldn’t find it up there at all. Even though you’d think they’d add it as part of the skybox…
Also an in-game codex would be pretty cool. Even it it’d probably become as unreliable as the rest of the lore in this game thanks to Blizz’s inability to stay consistent.
Yep. Basically, very little of importance added that we don’t already know. This interview could be summed up with “Codex, whoo!”
The star is the only other thing that’s really noteworthy, but I doubt -that’s- going to be relevant any time soon.
Thanks for summing it up!
The interview was fine. I don’t think there are too many hackle raising answers.
Pretty sure it is. I doubt the star disappearing will happen anytime soon. If they don’t keep him imprisoned for another ten years then it will feel like everything we did with Illidan was for nothing.
We sort of knew this already though, didn’t we? They prefaced this with saying that death isn’t permanent, and that couldn’t be more true with those old gods, because truly killing them would scar the land with stuff like the sha, right? Defeating them throws them back into a slumber for a while and then they’ll emerge later on to wage war again.
SWTOR does a lot wrong, but one thing they do right is the codex they have in the game with every location, important person, etc etc that you’ve encountered. Would be nice if Blizzard did the same, I could see myself making a game out of filling the codex out.
I’m interested to see what happens with Xal’atath and Sylvanas. I’ve said this before, but I’d love to see a situation where Xal’atath breaks free and offers her service to Sylvanas as an advisor. Sylvanas agrees and now we’re doing quests for this ancient (and horrifically evil) being who is pretty much being petty with Nathanos. All the while, we see her subtly giving Sylvanas access to dark and more dangerous secrets before finally leaving with a contingent of loyal followers to attend to N’zoth.
Okay I’m more conscious now, so allow me to elaborate on why this interview was a bit of a disappointment to me. Because as some have pointed out, it’s not the worst one they’ve done.
First off, no it’s not. It’s honestly not THAT bad overall. Certainly far from the worst. What made me go “Oh god” was their responses to lore questions. Namely “We don’t know if anyone is dead or gone for good, until we decide on a whim if it would be cool for them to be back”. To me, that is not a good way to write anything.
The second thing that really made me say “Oh my god why is this man allowed to write anything” is the Sargerite Keystone response. That piece of story was relevant in the last expansion. This was not a question about Warcraft 2 that’s more or less obsolete. This was the interviewer asking about a pretty big plothole, and they the best response they could come up with was “I’unno”.
Again, a lot of the interview was fine, and the codex thing could potentially be cool. Xal’atath sounds interesting, excited about that. Just wanted to elaborate on why I was a bit disappointed when reading this.
I’m surprised they brought up the problem with druid artifacts and xmog. I want to be a big werebear without those hideous fist weapons.
Getting that bear form was so effing hard, and only being able to use it with fist weapons is infuriating. I had too many temper tantrums over Kruul to let that only be relevant through Legion.
i’ll write the draenei codex myself if i have to
That would be for the best. I’m not sure I trust Blizzard to do us Draenei good with our Codex.
…then again, I hardly trust them with any of the races anymore.
I wonder how much of Xal coming back after Legion, and having a Velf model, and being entwined with Sylvanas all has to do with that self-insert writer seeing some sexy Xal fanart on tumblr and, well, you know…
