The people who said that legion was terrible seem to have left since about 2 months after legon’s launch, but it is overall seen as a good or better expansion by the community.
The problem is every single thing people hated and continue to hate about bfa started in legion and were actually worse in legion than they are now (at least in some ways). you name it, legion was just as bad or worse.
However I did see a conversation on another forum that said that people forgave everything legion did wrong simply because it was such a cosmetics-heavy expansion.
Frankly, I agree. legion was not good in any way, but it did have some “best in slot” mogs. I think people are willing to overlook all the bad on those reasons alone.
legion had class quests and mage towers, worse than anything bfa has ever done.
class quests were horrifyingly gated wastes of time NEEDED for progression until near the end. war campaign is totally ignorable.
mage towers were sub bait based on “fear of missing out” and required people to do challenges completely unsuited to your class or spec, all to get that sweet returning subs. I have maybe 29/36, and I have used 2 all bfa.
BfA took everything good about Legion, and applied a time-dilation lens to it so it takes the maximum possible time before people outright refuse to do it.
Legion had grind.
BfA has grind, only longer, and never ending.
Legion had M+.
BfA has M+, only the dungeons have mechanics so that you can never outgear them and power through.
Legion had bonus areas (as did many areas before them).
BfA has bonus zones, only they give slightly more xp than a normal quest and every interactible gives 1-2% instead of ~5%.
So on so on.
BfA aims to copy legion on a superficial level, and multiply the time scale of everything by triple.
Legion wasn’t faultless, by any means. But it wasn’t outright designed to milk players for everything it possibly could. It was testing the waters, in a manner of speaking. It also contained a LOT more rewards, and rewards that could exist between expansions, which was functionally a first outside of mounts to this point.
Are you serious? Legion was not good in any way? Do you love being milked for your money THIS much?
Let me show how Legion was much better in almost every way:
Unique Balance of power questline. This is unique content probably not alt friendly but it had a proper story going for it unlike this trainwreck grind we have in BFA because…grind.
Unique Illidan questline. Again another unique piece of content.
Unique profession storylines. Unlike the random quests scattered throughout BFA it gave you sense that instead of randomly earning numbers you went and discovered things.
The Artifact system. While not the perfect thing many hoped it was, it had lore associated with the weapon itself which amounted to a lot of pages and it added a huge skill tree which actually made your character more powerful.
Suramar. Not alt friendly or maybe a chore to those who didn’t like doing content. But it’s unique content and by far one of the best storylines WoW has seen along with it’s followup to Nighthold.
Order Halls. The best thing that happened in Legion because of 12 unique storylines. Yes some classes had it good and some had it bad. But again UNIQUE content instead of standard MMO grind.
I could go on and on. I hope you realize that Legion was way better than anything we have today.
The class campaign was WAY better than the War campaign, it was more enjoyable specially for alts since it wasnt the same exact story, and BFA is considerably worse when it comes to time gating
Personally I think nostalgia’s a little blinding with Legion. Towards the end in 7.3 it was considered good and better. By then they’d improved or fixed a lot of things.
But I distinctly remember these forums ablaze with complaints for most of the expansion. It had various good points to be sure, the class stuff was well liked and the Mage Tower too and so on, but generally it had almost the same reception as BfA. Doom upon doom in most aspects.
Compared to BfA, Legion is better. Most probably agree there. But on its own at the time there was a very different outlook on it.
Even without Nostalgia Legion is miles ahead and ranks up there in terms of proper unique content.
Unless you want random grinds with no lore or sense associated with it, Legion gave you a LOT of unique content. It is up there with the best expacs of all time.
The systems are debatable but it added too much unique content to dismiss it as nostalgia.
Legion is only looked at fondly because of the last half of the expansion. I remember the kicking & screaming, the “I quit” threads and so on cause apparently every one forgot about the no flying fiasco and the broken shore time gate.
No, satisfaction means feeling “complete,” and therefore less likely to sub. angst causes hopelessness, which feeds addiction.
you think they do it despite you not liking it, pop-psychology tells them your angst means money so they do it more.
legion m+ was a fun waste of time and bad content. bfa m+ is some monstrosity I have only done twice, and both groups had leavers on a 2 key after one wipe.
balance of power was TERRIBLE. I can solo the raids even on this allied race grinding character and I still refuse to do it.
illidan was a mistake, both in the first place and bringing him back. the “rejection of the gift” thing almost made me quit wow in totality. I still can’t fully commit to the game as I don’t want to have to deal with crap story like that in the future making me quit for real.
gated professions were TERRIBLE, but bfa was worse. I haven’t done any real crafting since 2 legion legendaries then nothing more.
artifact system was simply a trap to weaken players at first as there were definitely wrong paths in the weapon. secondly, every class became a chore to play pre-110 because of it.
I did suramar once, and never again.
I only did order halls for the mounts I never use besides my paladin’s.
It seems like most of your complaints stem from “This was terrible because I didn’t like it”.
Fair enough. But you have to realize that in an MMO grinds which are mindless are common. Instead we got unique content to a scale which has never been seen before in Legion which is really rare for a MMO.
That alone makes Legion way better than most expacs.
yes, I didn’t like it because it was terrible, and it was terrible so I didn’t like it. tautology is ok in subjective situations.
I really don’t understand the “lol, it’s an mmo, expect grinding” meme, as the best of any mmos are always with the least grinding. just like how the best parts of mmos are when you don’t have to be forced to play with people you don’t want to.
they are about a persistent world and capability to play with friends, not grinding and NEEDING a group.
Legion at first was not only alt unfriendly… but even spec unfriendly. However… people were listened to in legion… BfA with some exceptions seems to be the opposite
