Interested in Roleplaying

Good Morning

I am interested in Roleplaying. From what research I could find, it seems like Moonguard is the one of the more popular Alliance side RP servers. Just looking for a little guidance:

I have read that people use either TRP3 and Myroleplay addon. Does it matter which one I use? I wouldn’t be left out if I choose one or the other?

Personally I use MRP and I find role play. It depends on the person.

I use TRP3. I didn’t find myself left out when I didn’t use it, though. You can find RP in Stormwind at all hours of the day/night. Mage Quarter seems to be the most populated RP hub on this server. Good luck and welcome aboard!

I find that TRP3 is the better of the two! It allows you to open a GUI by targeting yourself. {Or on the map!} Instead of being intergrated into your character ui {Next to Rep/Currency I believe.} {Or at least last I knew.}. But it’s personal choice. :^)

Note; Also install Elephant and Listener! They’re a life savior! Along with an addon that extends your chat messages when you want to multiple post without pause. <3

Thanks everyone for the advice

Something that I didn’t see explicitly mentioned - TRP, XRP and MRP are all cross-compatible. They don’t all have the same options, like XRP is specifically made to work cross-server with anyone who also uses XRP, MRP is more stripped-down to the basics and TRP3 has ALL the bells and whistles with “First Looks” and personality aspect scales and you can program in colors and pictures and all kinds of stuff if you want to get really fancy with it.

But at the end of the day, they all use common functions and can “read” each other’s profiles, so if you pick one over the other you’ll still be able to see the profiles of people who use a different addon.

I’d personally recommend jumping in with both feet and using TRP3 from the get-go, since it’s definitely the gold standard for being able to scale up to some fancy stuff, but you can also start with just the basics and add on as time goes on. You’ll also be able to see all of the common functions that people use that the other addons don’t display.

Then, some other really helpful addons:

  • Listener - I only really use the Snooper function of this addon, so that you can hover over or click on a person and see what they said or emoted recently. It’s a real lifesaver in crowded scenes. It also pings you with an audible cue and flashes your out-of-focus game window if someone mentions your character’s name or emotes with you as the target.
  • Cross RP - If you ever find yourself interacting with the other faction, this addon is basically magic. Once you get an Elixir of Tongues from the vendor in the Dalaran sewers and have this, you’ll be able to understand /say in the other faction’s basic language (Orcish/Common), their emotes, and see their profiles. It’s totally essential for the Tournament of Ages coming up in August.
  • Emote Splitter - If you’ve wondered how people can post like five paragraphs one after the other at a time, this is how. Just keep writing, and the addon will split it out into different posts automatically. Emotes will do this automatically, posts in /say you need to manually hit enter to launch the next queued up post.
  • Elephant - A chatlog saver program, so that you can go back and refer to recent conversations. It’s nice for going back to see what people said who aren’t standing right around you anymore, or seeing the whole flow of a conversation and not just one person’s contributions. The history will still scroll off though, pretty quickly depending on volumes, so if there’s anything that you want to snag don’t delay!
  • Wow Instant Messenger (WIM) - After Rhonako mentioned it I realized that I totally forgot it, but WIM is great because it pulls whispers out into their own little mini-windows so that they stand out, and your direct conversations are easy to continue without typing out a person’s name every time. One of my characters and her husband are constantly, constantly “muttering” to each other, keeping up a running commentary on the events around them. WIM makes it easy to bip back and forth between their conversation and /say and /emote without it all getting muddled up in the default chat window. You may need to tweak it a little, though, because the default UI really, really wants to put these conversations in their own chat tabs these days and you’ll need to manually turn that function off for the addon to work.

I RP on MG on an alt!

TRP3 is a bit of a doozy to get used to. I used MRP when I first got started. It’s a great intro to RP add-ons.

WoW Instant Messenger is also great, not just for RP, but for managing your whispers!

It’s a lot of fun, and Moon Guard has some cool raiding guilds too if you wanna get some content done too!

And despite what they say about Goldshire (It’s true), it’s also a good place to find PvP goons for Arenas. They’re surprisingly good at it.

Cheers.

Most people on Moon Guard use TRP3, though a significant portion also use MRP.

Hotspots for RP (I’m assuming you’re looking for Alliance, because night elf) are Storwmind, and…and…Stormwind. Areas of Boralus are “off the chain” at times…you can find people doing stuff, but Stormwind is the hub.

You can find stuff in all of the districts, though I’ve seen more in the Mage Quarter (both the Blue Recluse with that man lying about free drinks and the Slaughtered Lamb). You can find stuff on the docks, and Lion’s Rest.

It’s fine if you don’t know all the specifics of the history of your people or the world, but you should know the broad strokes. Be respectful of other people, and if someone has some RP you don’t like, you can actually just, like, leave. Politely, I mean.

(People tend to use parentheticals to denote “out of character” chat, which is why you’ll sometimes see a heated argument where it looks like someone is having an aside because their pizza showed up.)

It would probably help if you have a few answers to basic questions that someone might ask you when being introduced: So, what do you do? Where are you from? Are you a cultist?

People are sometimes just standing around doing nothing. A lot of them are looking for “walk-up RP” which is what it sounds like. Certain add-ons let you set “in character” and “out of character” modes, so you can tell if that person just standing about is waiting for walk-up RP or waiting for a dungeon queue.

Remember that there’s another person playing that character. Be respectful of that. If you can’t, then you can ignore a character, or just walk away.

Also! Two important things about Moon Guard, Alliance side!

  • Like most highly populated servers, Trade Chat has become something…bizarre. Learn to ignore it, or shut it off completely.
  • You’ve heard rumors about Goldshire, and the Lion’s Pride Inn. You’re probably curious if it’s as bad as they say! It is! Stay away! I’m not saying this with a wink and a smile and “heh, or you do you” type of way. I’m saying this in the "seriously, there’s oddly aggressive cobras in that region, and we are nowhere near a hospital with anitvenom; which doesn’t matter because the cobras also have rabies and guns.

Good luck! Have fun!

If I might add to that addon list…think about finding the Musician addon. Some of us nuts actually enjoy RPing as a bard and providing musical atmosphere/entertainment. It’s also a great way to generate walk-up by giving people an excuse to stop and comment on the music.

Not addon advice, but how about some advice on getting started in the RP scene?

Relax and have fun.
If you don’t know how to approach someone or a group, ask. We are generally approachable.
If you’d rather sit back and watch at first, that is ok, too!

When you’re actually RP’ing, there’s like 2-3 rules.
1: No Godmodding. This means your character cannot be defeated in any way, shape or form. Yeah, its “cool” to have a cool toon with powers and such, but people get very bored, very quickly with a toon that always wins with little effort.
In addition, your toon doesn’t know everything either. Example: You, the player, may know Sylvanas is buddies with the Jailer, but your toon would not.
2: You control your toon. Nobody else’s. Your toon’s actions and fate are up to you, and its very rude to write how someone else’s toon will react.

Edit because I forgot rule #3: have fun! RP is meant to be enjoyed.
