Interest Check - The Library of Adventurers

The Library of Adventurers

As heroes fall, we struggle to remember them.

What the heck is this about?

I would like to propose the formation of an in-game faction-neutral group that meets up once every 1-2 months and holds meetings where they discuss scholarly matters like what they’ve discovered about player-originating content. Basically, revealing things about characters or groups that we players have created ourselves that might not have had a chance to be discussed openly before.

On top of offering more RP for people who have Historian and Scholar characters, this would also allow for people to share background lore and information that they’ve developed on their own that other players may find relevant to their own stories or situations, and will allow the two content creators to coordinate their efforts in a more constructive manner. This, in turn, will help bolster not just the quality of the role-play for all parties involved, but the general health of the server as well.

These meetings would not be Story Circle-themed sessions; rather, they would be more in the line of ancient colleges and libraries. In essence, it would just be different characters meeting up, discussing what they have discovered, explaining why this might be important/relevant, presenting the evidence, and adding this knowledge to the collection in some form - after their peers have formed a consensus that it should be added.

Okay, so where will we post this "collection"?

Now, I’d also like to make an OOC proposal that goes hand-in-hand with the formation of this IC “Library”.

This idea has seen many iterations, but it has rarely been given a lot of attention. Every Role-Player on WoW uses various methods to discuss their characters - in-game conversation events like Story Circles, Discord server posts, Fanwiki pages, and forum threads. With all of these options available, and due to the incomplete nature of each option, it is quite literally impossible to search for information regarding people’s characters, guilds, and stories unless you know exactly what you are looking for, and exactly where that content was posted. There is also no current method in use for people to share and discuss stories of characters that may be retired or killed off, nor is there an easy way to share other characters that might have been killed off before the current lore event started (parents killed in battle, teachers lost during one of the invasions, etc).

As an example - Fanwikis. The WyrmrestAccord Fanwiki has a strong userbase, and is frequently updated to this very day. However, navigating the fanwiki is next to impossible if you were not the original creator of the page entries. Further, while the wiki is easy to use for a creator, as a resource of information other than general character pages with short biographies, it doesn’t offer the full array of content hosting that many writers who create content for characters and guilds need to share their material. In other words, if you want to read a short story and you can’t remember the name or the author, you’re basically screwed. Authors are also unable to add “chapters” to stories, and instead have to add them onto the original page or are forced to create new pages for each chapter. Idhron and the current moderation team is doing a great job (and have been for a decade now!), but the platform itself is the problem.

However, we can actually assemble a resource tool that would allow people to access this content in a more manageable way. For content that is inaccessible, such as Discord and other private messaging posts, we can host this content ourselves if the creators so wish it. What I’m talking about is making a site where navigating through characters, guilds, stories, journals, and so on, becomes a much easier task than the options currently available to us. At the moment, I’m suggesting that a forum is created. We can create forum categories and subcategories that allow for the fast and simple navigation of content.

For example, we could assemble the forum like this:

And so on from there. We would be able to organize stories based on the era in which they were relevant, and add special tag options that allow people to link stories with other character pages, so that searching for a character would yield any relevant stories to that character.

If you think either of these ideas are worth the time and energy it would take to assemble them, I’d love to hear about it. If you think that either of these are total wastes of time and bandwidth, I’d also love to hear about why. I have discussed this topic with many people privately, but I haven’t made an attempt to draw public attention to it before.

For the moment, I only want to confirm a general interest check in the ideas that I’ve presented. Such a project would take time to assemble, and there would need to be a small team of dedicated individuals managing both the IC and OOC “libraries”. If there is a general census that shows significant interest, we can start making plans after that point. I don’t want anyone to begin getting ahead of themselves.

Thanks for reading this gigantic wall of text!

This sounds like a great idea!

Yes! Yes! Yes!

It’s a project that would take a lot of time & energy at the fully developed stage. Start small. In-game meetups and somewhere to collect transcripts of the stories told.

This is a fantastic idea. Please try and develop it.

Okay, so it does seem like there is some general interest, at least for the In-Character portion. I’m going to go ahead and start making some plans to coordinate that event; once it concludes, if there is still interest for the OOC portion (the establishment of the forum/site), then I’ll also get right to work on that. Thanks for the feedback, guys!

This sounds quite promising. A central repository for WrA-RPers’ stories and other relevant writings would provide an ideal back-up in case all that stuff is lost to time, as is the fate for most of the old WrA forum’s content.

I am unsure if the following material would be helpful, but here are weblinks to the Google Doc repositories I’ve compiled over the last three years about WrA Forsaken RP stuff such as the RAS guild and the Shadow Sermons:

I imagine those alongside other character and guild historical records from WrA-RPers (with their permission, of course) would be useful sources for this collection idea. If that resource eventually gets assembled, feel free to add my research to it.

What a nice idea. A collection of the stories of the players, not the stories of the developers. I do not actively play the game as of this post, but if I can help… I’d like to.

Maybe there could be a discord or something that you can build a library with. With discussion areas to help plan new stories out, or to edit stories that people need help with.

So I’ve been looking around the forums and a few Discord servers, trying to find out which days are most open, and it looks like Saturday, May 16th, at 5 PM PST (server time) will be the best day to hold the first meeting event. As such, I have created both an Alliance and Horde calendar event that I can invite people to, to help remind them.

The vague wording of the message is made even more mysterious by the lack of the author’s identity, save for the initials. Regardless of how cryptic the message remains, the map on the back is anything but. It shows an accurate depiction of the Storm Peaks, and has a set of coordinates that undoubtedly lead to the Temple of Order. Further, the more curious-minded may discover that holding the vellum map-side facing a source of light reveals glowing ink that highlights the exact location of the Temple.

But what is most mysterious, is that those that are prone to even greater experimentation, would eventually come to discover the final message. Holding the vellum letter-side facing a source of light causes all of the previous words to vanish completely. Slowly, new letters would form, increasing in opacity until the final message was revealed to the reader.

“The Library of Adventurers”.

i may end up coming on a different character (either faction is possible), but please send a calendar invite to Kunbo and to Mojian, both on Alliance. Those are the two I’m primarily on these days, and that way the date won’t slip my mind.

Good luck!

Oh, crap, right.

For Alliance players - send Aroga a letter or a whisper in-game and I’ll toss you an invite.

For Horde, just do the same for me.

If you’re on Discord, hit me up at RestlessAuthor#3386.

Consider Harvest Moon Publishing interested.

Sending this back up to the top just to say that this is indeed still on! Just a few weeks away now, May 16th. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Woo hoo ! :ramen: :tea:

I hope I get to see everyone at the Storm Peaks this Saturday! If people are still interested, that is.

If this event goes well, then we’ll talk about doing a lot more stuff outside of just the RP - establishing the online resource, maybe making some in-game communities, that sort of thing. Bring all your scholarly toons!

So as stated, once more, the time is 5 PM PST. We’re meeting at the Temple of Order!

Players should be reminded to bring a large supply of Elixir of Tongues! If you are somehow phased and cannot see the other faction, you will need to try some relogging, or try joining a group to see if you can get phased over.

If you need some help with coordination, join the Discord server to see what’s up! Invite code: wzqC6TA

Is the intent for today’s meetup to be IC or more focused on OOC discussion & organization?

Today’s the big day! I’m hoping I get to meet a lot of new scholarly characters at the RP later.

So, once again, this is the first IC meeting for this group. Any discussion of OOC, out of game content will be the result of how well this first meeting goes. There are going to be additional meetings on later dates, and what we discuss today will influence what we do later.

I don’t want to shoulder every ounce of responsibility; this is supposed to be a community, a server-wide effort. If I’m the only one who has control, then things will end up just the same as every other group out there. What we are looking to accomplish as listed in the original post is seeing if there are enough players who want to form a RP group dedicated to hosting more scholarly-themed events (Research, archaeology, etc) and bringing their results together at an IC location - and from there, seeing if these people are also interested in establishing an out-of-game resource hub for player-created story content. The focus of anything out-of-game would be to specialize in ease of access for both guests and creators, focusing on navigation, user interface, and so on.

This meeting is entirely IC. This is just another interest check to see who is willing to attend.

Once more, the location is the Temple of Order in the Storm Peaks. We will be assembling at 5 PM PST - that’s 5 PM WrA server time. You should bring whichever character you believe is most appropriate to a meeting of minds. Faction neutral, of course!

Got one of my scholarly types pre-placed. See you in a couple-three hours.
