Interacial not allowed?

For Human customization, why are certain facial features locked behind the color of their skin?

I love that Blizzard added these customizations for diversity, especially considering that many people who play Humans like their character to resemble them IRL. However, people that are interracially mixed seem to be left out because of this restriction.

Maybe it’s because I grew up in NYC, but I’ve seen so many different mixes of white/black, black/asian, asian/white, etcetera. One of the coolest mixes I’ve seen personally was this guy who was half black & japanese, he had dark skin with asian facial features and a silky afro, it was very beautiful.

Not trying to be controversial, but the current facial restrictions make it seem like in game humans selectively breed with each other based on their skin color. I’m 100% sure that is not the intended message, but it sure does come off that way which is pretty discouraging considering real life implications.

I know this is a fantasy game and I may be thinking too much into it, but humans as a race are a special case considering they are representations of us in the real world. Additionally, I’m very grateful that you guys even added in black/asian customizations in the first place, you didn’t have to do that but you did anyways and that’s awesome.

Also being mixed myself , I wish the game would ease this customization restriction on the facial features so we can have more representation in game.

Good point that I hadn’t considered, hopefully they loosen the restrictions a bit to make mixed looking human customization possible. +1

Yeah, there’s some strange limitations with some faces locked behind skin tones. There many scars that only appear on black/asian skin tones.

This wasn’t the case on beta/ptr when they were added but on live they changed it to be restrictive.

Given the devs have repeatedly stated there’s hardly any POC at Blizzard, it doesn’t surprise me this didn’t occur to them or for some reason thought a fair skinned person with normatively Black features was “wrong” or something.

Lightskins and litebrites don’t exist I guess.

The phenotypes should be loosened.

I don’t think it was intentional for reasons of racial purity or something

I think it was a decision to make it easier on the art department. Some cutting of corners.

Like how only 2 races can be DH, to save time and money.

OPs are going hard on a Monday.

Probably the one Cered thread I’d actually agree with. I’m dating an Asian / American mix woman, and been with her for the passed four years. She’s mentioned the same thing. While she loves the ability to make a human female which has features like her, there’s also something to be said for the fact that faces and all that are locked behind certain skin tones. It doesn’t make much sense to me either, also being someone from NYC.

If they want to lock facial feature with different race they should lock hair style as well, this is Animal Crossing’s cultural appropriation issue all over again.

I’m sure there are plenty of looks you could try for that might be percieved as mixed race.

Just as there are races of azeroth that ‘have’ mixed there are human races that mix. As they mix more eventually you get new normative appearances of people. Just as I don’t expect them to go out of their way to make mixed Azerithian races I don’t have think we need more perceptions of human mixed races either. We have enough to work with IMO.

(I’m mixed too IRL)

If this were added to the game, it would unleash an outcry about how Blizzard is shoving an agenda down the throats of players. Tauren and and Trolls have Native American and Jamaican influences, so having more racial options for humans should not be an issue.

Some people won’t be happy until they can import a picture of themselves to make their character.

I liked the random customization that did a good on my paladin. Sometimes random does better than I can.

They do! I have one in my closet! Granted I’m missing like 99% of the pieces that came with it…

(Sorry, couldn’t resist)

As someone eluded early in the conversation, this might have been a issue with money and time and something that wasn’t revisited at a later date. Keeping models simple makes it easier on a lot of different creative department’s as we have seen how certain characters already clip through various pieces of equipment. 9.1.5 is starting to address this issue and given time you might find the features you want, but I don’t think any game at the start has been able to give every option available that people would want.

Mixed race female here. It’s possible to make a mixed race look but I 100% agree, locking certain faces behind certain skin tones sucks. Thanks to those faces being locked it’s currently a challenge and leaves you with few options (that don’t look like a randomized, uncanny valley nightmare).

We need a slider. I’m half-Caribbean (black), half-Roma (whiteish), and there really isn’t any existing combination of human features that recreates anything close to my appearance.

Luckily, I play Horde.

I know right?

There is only one acceptable culture to appropriate from, doesn’t Blizzard know this.

That’s life, just limited choices due to limited dev resources. We don’t get an option to be a skinny human with normal forearms or a short troll either. Most races don’t even have two different looking faces. Just do the best you can.

Representation aside, I think that customization restriction is arbitrary and uneccessary; and I also would like to see it go away.
