"Intended" system of BOE's becoming souldbound?

Hey guys,

I’m really confused about an intended system in the game and am wondering if anyone has an explanation to why it’s a thing.
I was very excited to find a BOE in raid finder and threw it up on the auction house in hope to make some gold. It didn’t sell so w/e I will try to put it back up at a lower price I thought. When I looted it from the mailbox it instantly was added to my collection and became warbound and not BOE. I figured it was a bug so I contacted support and this was their response.

When you put a BoE item on the auction house and it doesn’t sell, retrieving it from your mailbox can sometimes cause it to become soulbound. This is due to the Warband Collection system, which automatically adds the appearance of the item to your transmog collection when it is sold or destroyed. As a result, the item becomes “warbound,” meaning it cannot be traded or sold again. This is intended behavior and is not something we can reverse.

What I gathered from this is when your BOE doesn’t sell you are gambling on a diceroll if you are able to resell it or not because it “sometimes” becomes souldbound? And that is an “intended” feature? Does anyone know the reasoning this was implemented? It doesn’t make any sense to me. It just brings frustration and confusion.

Blizzard responded to this and said they’re going to hotfix it. So it’s not intended. Sucks in the meantime but hopefully they fix it

might have to re-farm it or they might give a copy to comp for it dont know the details of the boe gear getting “nuked” like that being restored

They said it was the result of a hotfix over in the Bug report forums. And said they’re looking to fix it. But yeah, I don’t know how they’ll do it. Sounds like everything got soulbound so that’s a lot of items to fix.

Ty for the response. Thats weird the GM is playing it off like it’s intended and not a bug. I knew that didn’t sound right.

Yeah I find that weird too. He was probably guessing.
I doubt the departments communicate with each other. Lol

Basically what happened is an edge case due to a change from Dragonflight in regards to how BoEs drop from raids:

Basically their change is that for the first few weeks you can only get raid gear via gameplay. So stuff like BoEs, including from lower difficulties, will be locked until a few weeks have passed. Per my guildmates, it usually coincides when the RWF is over and thus Mythic has been cleared at least once.

So what happened is intentional. You are supposed to be able to sell BoEs normally, but you cannot do so for a little while when the raid has been released. But as far as I am aware, this sounds like a pretty unique edge case so there’s likely not a template that fit the issue at hand, so they mistakenly used the wrong templated answer and assumed that your question was about the actual BoE-to-Warbound which has to do with how mailboxes work.

So what happened is that you encountered a strange edge case combined with an intended feature of how mailboxes work, and the two things concluded with what was quite likely a very confused GM using the wrong templated answer and/or not understanding your question since, again, kinda a strange edge case scenario of item drops being a BoE when it wasn’t supposed to be one, it getting returned to you, and the whole intended mailbox thing happening.
