Instead of having, ‘bows’, ‘crossbows’, and ‘guns’, what if we have ‘bows’ and ‘guns’.
Combine crossbows and bows (crossbows are a type of bow) and then add dual wielding pistols and put that into the ‘guns’ category along with the 2h rifles we already have.
I kinda wish Blizz had gone the GW2 route of skills tied to weapon type. I’m not sure how granular that should be, but I like the idea of a short bow being fast and nimble and long bow launching chonky nukes.
I’m also a fan of weapon characteristics in general, like swords doing more crit, axes bleed, maces stun, polearms increased reach (like +3 minimum), dual wield for flurry-esque play, etc. Weapon homogenization makes things kina boring, imho. I suppose you could argue that it makes it easier to balance, because CLEARLY Blizz is concerned with that [audible eye roll]
You don’t need to remove a group to add a group unless there is some incredibly, incredibly legacy code involved, and given that ranged weapons already behave differently from pre-Cata, that seems very unlikely.
If you want paired pistols, just add paired pistols.
One thing I think DCUO’s dual pistol do well is that they actually help with boss mechanics by flipping a pistol user out of most one-shot AOEs’ lethality range.
