Instance Limit Per Hour

I’ve always wondered what the legitimate purpose of the 10 Instances Per Hour is?

As someone who does a good bit of twinking, I run into this instance cap A LOT! It’s very frustrating and I can’t even fathom what the purpose is? It’s not a raid and doesn’t have the best gear in the game for endgame, so why cap it at all?

Mostly to limit bots from farming non stop. Profession mats, boe transmog, stuff like that.

Doesn’t do much but thats their reasoning.

Also you can somewhat cheese the 10x lockout. Say you run dungeon A 10x, you can still zone into other instances one time during the hour. So you could do dungeon A 10x, dungeon B 1x, dungeon C 1x, etc.

As said above. This is a gold farmer measure. It prevents automated acquisition of game resources in an area of the game that might otherwise go unnoticed. Instanced content tends to have a higher concentration of higher quality rewards and it allows them to throttle and limit those. People used to farm low level instances on repeat with high level characters to disenchant boss drops for mats that they were selling on the AH. You can do that rather quickly on high level characters which tanks the rarity and value of those materials. It’s still doable just at a regulated rate via the instance limit per hour.

Sad but thanks both of you

It’s a legacy from Vanilla, that they’ve just kept because “why not”.

Back in the day, in Dire Maul, there was a chest. The chest randomly spawned.

With a hunter, you could zone in, use the eagle eye zoom ability, and see if the chest was there. If not, you popped out, reset, and did it again.

If the chest was there, there was a chance that it had the start for the Quel’Serrar quest, which was popular among tanks, and worth gold on the AH.

So, you can imagine that at the time, farmers would spinning up a zillion instances, all of which come with resource loads (because they have to time out), and this would wreak havoc on the instance servers.

From that point on, we get the 10 instance limit.

Sounds like they should’ve just removed the Chest lol but good to know. I will remain annoyed by just sitting around waiting I guess

It would be nice to have a visual timer or counter somewhere in the UI.

Savedinstances too, which does a whole lot more. I highly recommend to those with a lot of alts.

I don’t know if or where this still happens.

But in BfA and you could go to a place like Iron Docks on dead shard and find 200-500 boomkins exiting the instance, running to the exact same spot near the start of the entrance, pausing there for 3 seconds and then running back in.

I think they were just clearing trash at the start for drops and gold, so it’s one of the cheapest ways to stop that.

Would it be better if they put in secret auto report that triggers if someone does run more than 10 instances in an hour and then went and observed them to see if it was an automated player? Of course. But that would cost a lot more money and they might have to fire a paying customer.

Mog farming is a casino game, you insert some time and get a chance at the thing you want.
Time is the currency you bet with in this casino game. The instance per hour limit and the lockouts are the minimum accepted antes.

There’s actually cheese you can do to straight up reset the instance count after you cap it.
Which means the bots are probably also aware therefore making the whole thing pointless
