I know there are other threads about lag spikes but posting my specifics in the hope there is something I am missing.
Problem: Massive lag spikes in M+ only (I do not raid or PVP). Open world has zero problems. Both home and world will spike up to 1k.
Characterized by running in place for 5 of 10 seconds - sometimes game catches up - sometimes have to Alt F4 out of it and relog
Note: this is not the same problem as the game freezing on bosses during certain mechanics from loading sounds - which is characterized by a full freeze (not running in place). If you are having that problem I highly recommend MysticalOS’s recent video about it.
There are zero issues during the week. On saturday it is intermittent (yesterday played fine all day - but sometimes issues). Sunday is almost unplayable.
Internet provider is Xfinity. Zero issues with internet aside from WOW.
Problem is at its worst on sundays. I have started using NordVPN to try and alleviate it. I am in NM, and have tried different connections all over the US. Sometimes I think I found a routearound but then sure enough the problem reappears.
I have paired down addons to only DBM (even tried getting rid of recount) - but I do not think addons have anything to do with it given it is weekend only issue.
LLM program recommended running resource monitor on the IP related to wow.exe during instances. This is not straight forward given that there are about 10 different wow.exe addresses in the TCP connections page (not sure which one is the IP address i should be looking at)
I am not sure why this only presents itself during M+. From what I read the instance servers are different than the open world servers, but i would imagine they are physically housed in the same area (obviously i know nothing about networking)
Are there any recommendations for where to point VPN that may route around obstructions?
If this an ISP issue - is there a recommendation on identifying the correct wow.exe IP address to run winMTR against?
They are installing fiber in our city, but not available yet in my area- otherwise would try it. Maybe i should try a phone hotspot…
All suggestions are appreciated. The frustration level is through the roof from bricking keys. I am going to end up with a leaver flag from ALT F4ing when the game freezes on last 25% of a final boss.
That is interesting information! I usually join others keys - maybe I should start running my own and see if it has an effect on the lag.
City is Albuquerque - server is Bloodscalp. I have tried VPN’ing to Chicago without much luck. Boise ID seemed to be the best but that might have just been a coincidence. I might try jumping all the way to Canada later and seeing if that helps (rather have higher constant ping than spikes).
You can use something like Portmaster to check outgoing connection
You can then check Active app, and see the IP addresses you’re connected to, you can then traceroute to that IP when you have issue (remember to press reload)
I am sure there’s better APP, but on Linux this is the one that i uses.
example is 66.40.178.228 server located in Chicago (that i too have issue with)
I played in Proudmoore which is located in LA / US west
example rn i am connected to 64.224.29.116, which is in Las Vegas
And i am playing just fine and dandy, but the moment i get into loading screen when changing zones/entering instances and it’s on US East, i’ll be stuck on loading screen and have to alt f4.
I am (not)glad that i am not the only one having this issue.
I have checked with other games that is connected to US servers Battlebit and CS2, fps game where i would notice if there’s packet loss and bad lag spikes/dc.
I am playing these game just fine (well apart from 200+ms, i in Indonesia)
I made sure i am connected to US servers by checking the IP on my Portmaster
And i don’t have this weird issue like with WoW
So i concluded that this issue is on Nodes in US soil, especially US center and East. That Blizzard own or atleast uses.
